Memory Foam Crib Mattress Topper for Crib/Toddler Bed Size 28x52

I ordered this product for my daughter's bed - she is 13 months. She did indeed sleep better (although not through the night, and any parent who has a night-waking child will laugh when they see the description that says, "they'll surely sleep through the night now." Ha. Generally I like it - I think it made her hard-as-a-rock baby mattress more comfortable, and she seems to genuinely enjoy the bed. I think it was a good investment for her toddler years, until she graduates to a standard bed. A few thoughts on it:
1) it's a little large for our "standard" crib mattress - not large enough that we had to cut it, and as another reviewer suggested, it fits with the mattress pad and crib sheet over it. But between its bulk, and the crib design (there isn't much space between the crib rails and the mattress for safety reasons), we actually have to lift the mattress all the way out to change the sheet. A slight inconvenience, but worth it for the extra comfort.
2) It is THICK. Really thick. I would say it adds a good 2" to the thickness of the mattress (good to know if you have a climber).
3) It does indeed have a funky smell, as several other reviewers suggested. I unwrapped it and left it sit out overnight, and that helped a lot, but it took WEEKS for the smell to clear completely. I no longer smell it now, but the first few weeks it was evident.
4) It discolored where it touches the bars of the crib on the side. I am not sure what this means, but I thought it was odd.

This mattress topper definitely needs a clean/recently-washed mattress pad. It looks and feels very comfortable.... and it fits the crib perfectly.... BUT...

I was very concerned when I unwrapped the mattress topper from the plastic. I immediately felt lightheaded and the smell was pretty intense - like a gas station but more intense because our toddler's room is small. I immediately opened the window to air out the room and threw the plastic wrap in the basement. Is this normal for it to smell so toxic? I am nervous about him sleeping on this.

If you do purchase this, I would recommend planning to "air out" this mattress before using it.

Ok... so my husband, a chemical engineer, just came home... I am not crazy... he said the room is fine now (because the window is open), but that the mattress has a strong hydrocarbon (aka gas-like) smell. The mattress is now in the basement... we will air it outside on nice days for a couple of weeks. If it still smells, we are sending it back and may do so sooner... that smell can't be good, can it??? We will try to research the contents of this mattress... most likely, we might just stuff our fluffy duvet under the mattress pad to make the crib softer and return this one.

We have a similar product, same thickness and size.

When you put a sheet over this topper and your crib mattress, it becomes VERY snug and compact.

Our daughter, now 19 months, has spent her entire life on our memory foam bed and is still breathing and alive.

When we transitioned to a toddler bed just recently her crib mattress is hard enough to bounce quarters off of and she was tossing and turning all night long.

The topper made a huge difference for her.

Would I put a newborn on this? Not sure. But our newborns sleep with us in our bed, not alone in a crib.

Any baby that can roll themselves completely over will be able to avoid suffocating themselves.

Great for toddlers and makes her bed so comfy!! Would not recommend for newborns or infants!

I opened this up to let it air out and sitting in the same room with it for just 20 minutes gave me a headache.

If I aired this out for a year's time, I could never get over the worry that my baby would be breathing those fumes in for 9 hours a day. I'm not the "everything needs to be organic!" type, but my mom instinct is telling me that this mattress topper just isn't right.

I'm going to look into natural latex instead.

I bought this for my 3 year old and it's exactly what I wanted. The thickness is perfect and you can easily use a fitted sheet. There was no odor as indicated in other reviews. I would recommend for toddlers looking for a bit more comfort on a standard crib mattress.

Of course, you don't use this for a infant. My toddler is using this since she was 19 months old, and she seems to like it. She start sleeping in her own crib instead of my bed.

I did buy this product through Amazon but used an account/payment in my maiden name so it might not be verified. If you look at my history you will see that I am a legitimate frequent shopper. I did not buy this product as an infant. I was a new mom with a definite strong fear of SIDS. I did my homework about when SIDS becomes statistically less of a threat (about 6 months you are almost out of the woods and by about 2 the fear is just about over). At 2 I decided that the risk of me getting in a car accident with my child because of sleep deprivation outweighed the risk of SIDS.

Because of the risk and new standards for infant sleep, mine did not. I did my best until we got him a "big kid bed" and despite the unique Disney Cars design the bed was unslept in because it was not comfy. I read all the reviews about memory foam mattresses and decided to give the pad a try because the existing mattress was good and spending a great deal of money on a bed that would only last another year or two did not make sense.

It has been about 6 months and while the mattress cover did not keep the monsters out of the closet it, it did ensure once my son was a sleep he stayed asleep because he was comfy. If he lies flat on the mattress he can breath out of both nostils just as well as on a standard mattress. It is a stuggle but even a standard crib mattress fits over both the pad and mattress.

This was a great in between option for us, cheaper than a new questionable mattress and much cozier than the rock of a mattress from infant time. I did not smell anything chemical like when this product was removed from the package. I did cover this and the sheet with a water resistant cloth cover so the distance between any possible chemical residue and my child was two layers deep.

My husband and I broke down and purchased a memory foam matress for ourselves and my husband's snoring and constant rolling began to cease. I got to thinking and wondered if it would help my 2 year old son as well so I ordered one. I took off my son's mattress pad and looked at his mattress....I discovered that the waterproof mattress was hard and wasn't helped much by the thin mattress pad...no wonder my son wasn't comfortable. From the first night that I put the memory foam topper on his mattress, my son stopped rolling around as much and he barely made any noise while he slept anymore. Also, I discovered he was waking up happier and was sleeping better at daycare because he was well rested at night. The topper is as expensive as one for a full size bed but I think it is well worth it to see my son so well rested and happy. I just wish I would have thought of it before now.

We were having trouble getting our 18m old son to sleep in his own bed. He was used to sleeping in our bed with us. When he would fall asleep in our bed, we would move him into his room to his bed. The minute he touched the mattress he would wake right up. I was looking to buy a new toddler mattress when I came across this mattress topper. What a difference!! I can't say that he is sleeping through the night yet, but we no longer have to let him fall asleep in our bed. He climbs right into his bed without a fuss. The only issue we had with the topper was the smell. We had to let it air out for a few days b/c the smell was so strong. We have had it for a few weeks now and the smell is almost gone, definately not as strong. All in all, great product. We are very happy!!
