This catalogue documents a retrospective exhibition on the Afro-American artist Romare Bearden (1914-1988), held at the Studio Museum, Harlem, USA. About 100 prints, drawings and paintings were displayed, ranging from the cubist figurative pieces of the 1940s, to the lyrical abstract works of the 1950s and 1960s, to the later collages Bearden created. The catalogue depicts in colour about 25% of the works in the exhibition. An essay by Sharon Patton focuses on the themes, styles and iconography, examining Bearden's work within the context of American art, jazz, myth and spirituality.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This is a fact-filled companion to the Bearden retrospective mounted and to be circulated to five other cities by the Studio Museum in Harlem through January 1993. Bearden was a significant modern of the post-World War II era, a master of collage who imported its techniques into his paintings. A striking colorist and sensitive designer, Bearden was also a sensuous philosopher. His themes from black American life are powerful, evocative, and universal. Bearden authority Mary Schmidt Campbell's brief comments are incisive: "The new world Bearden wanted to create out of his 'Negro experience' was different from mainstream art . . . his new art was value-laden." Patton contributes a review of his career and its major themes. There are over 100 relatively small illustrations, 25 in color. Recommended as a basic book.
