I personally believe that the Sleepytime Trio are the greatest band in the mid/late-90's screamo scene. While this CD may not have the most stellar production, the rawness shows that they had little need for studio trickery, instead relying on their amazing song writing ability and phenominal energy. Listening to songs such as "Jesus Extract" makes me well up and want to start screaming alongside them, no matter where I am (thankfully, I have a little more restraint than that). Members went on to form other bands, such as Bats And Mice, Ben Davis (the bassist's solo project), Engine Down, Milemarker, and The Rah Bras. It's amazing that these guys can consistently persue their every musical whim, and with each endevor come out with truely amazing music. This is definitely the best album that I own.

Memory minus is not only the best cd of 1998, but the best cd of the 1990's, hands down. The CD makes me shake my booty like Norman Smiley. Also, these guys are HOT!

i remember when these guys started and they had this funny 7" record w/ bunnies on it....then the music on the record.....oh man. it then seams normal how much these guys mean even now. their music is so angular and dense yet so controlled and almost dreamy and tribal at ther same time, there were only a few other doing similar things. but the rythmic sense of this band is what made it a truly driving emotional force. such fierce drums, and edgy guitars combined with the soft loud dynamic allowed them to just rip it up. interesting compositions, unbridled angst, and beauty and angles. it can easily be compared to other great bands like hoover and june of 44 for its mathematical diversity and heavy basslines. but thank god for drummers who are so free and versatile in their composure to keep the beat and keep the intensity. this cd has just as much power and creative lean in todays music society that it is worth owning if youve ever been into indie and punk rock. ever.

when a friend and i first heard rock candy on his record player back in 1996 we couldn't ungape our jaws."this sounds like max colby if they cut out all the slack and got right to the point" he said. i couldn't possibly agree more, with sleepytime having two members of max colby it was refreshing to have a new band refine what they were excellent at, rather than abandon it for a totally new direction. that, and there is something about hearing a song for the first time that makes you want to turn it off, find your guitar, and rock out yourself that is so powerful. since i discovered them in 1996, sleepytime trio have been my favorite band. since this compilation came out in 1997, this has been my favorite cd. to this day, i can't explain why this band was so amazing. but perhaps it has something to do with the fact that the few recorded examples we have by them are so on point. specifically, the six songs from the first recording (jesus extract, rock candy, speak again twice, not without my swimmies, flake city and all ease) sound so fresh even now they cut like a knife. in my opinion, the recording quality of those songs is perfect for those songs--i couldn't imagine them having the same effect if they were polished like the newer tracks. so why are sleepytime so amazing? i love the run-on sentence abstract lyrics that read like e.e. cummings. who else does that? i love the short, fast songs. the way the woodblock snare cuts through the am-radio-tone guitars. the tasteful hint towards math rock without having it distract you from the song. the contrasting vocals. that they could restrain themselves to write songs revolving around the E chord and yet explore so much within that key. that both guitarists played matching wood-grained gibson "the pauls." all of this is trivial, of course, and could probably be argued about many other bands. all i know is i can't think of another band that did it all right like sleepytime trio. that scored 100% with me. and that to this day, makes me want to stop what i'm doing and start a band on every listen.
