Book Description

For the fans of George R. R. Martin … From the pen of New York Times bestseller Susan Sizemore, an all-new full-length novel that sweeps you into a strange new world of fantasy, romance and adventure…

On the island world of three moons, after years of war, Naval Surgeon Megere Cliff returns home to find herself caught between her obligation to her family and her need to be free at last. But duty must always command her, and so she puts herself on the marriage mart, in the rites of the Seeker Season.

Beautiful, intelligent, and brave, Megere attracts suitors who view her as prime breeding stock, but beneath the frivolity of the parties and balls, trouble is brewing. Caught between conspiracies and fanatics, danger buffets Megere.
Should she trust the enigmatic, imperious Lord Adrew North? Or is he the very enemy she fears?

5.0 out of 5 stars Most Excellent Read! August 16, 2011

When Megere set out to become that rarest of rare, a certified female surgeon little did she know it would lead her to a formal Loudon Season and Romance......
Only the best authors can create a believable alternate world and culture, while accurately handling both the bloody realities of warfare and the delicate and painful matters of the heart. Memory of Morning is set in an alternate of our world, at a time when war is waged in great wooden ships and medicine is still a new frontier. With war comes societal change and Megere's personal ambition leads her to questioning in the Court of the Gracers (to whom all Change is sedition) and to both the approval and censure of the Nobles who rule the Empire. Amidst all this Megere remains staunch and dedicated to her ambition, and conflicted of heart between two men met while serving as surgeon with the Fleet and others from when her family is invited to one of the rare Open Seasons at the Capitol - where yet unmarried Seekers search for a mate in a swirl of gaiety and opulence that will be familiar to any reader of Jane Austen and the like. The ending will surprise and delight, and I am waiting for the next in the series for Magere is just one of a family that is certain to Change their world.

And on an aside note I would heartily recommend any of Susan Sizemore's other work ranging from romance to two very intriguing vampire series. Her books have a permanent place in my library!

Memory of Morning is a wonderfully entertaining story about Dr. Megere Cliff, a young woman finishing a two-year tour of duty in the Imperial Navy, eager to begin her civilian career as a fully accredited surgeon. The novel is also an exciting adventure set in the heart of the Ang Empire, where the society is reminiscent of Regency England...with several significant differences. Megere lives in a world without large land masses, only islands, so that both trade and warfare require mastery of the sea. War is waged from the decks of wooden sailing ships, and metals are a scarce resource. During the past few generations, a deadly plague has swept through the population, contributing to a growing restlessness at all levels of society. Some believe that all people should be encouraged to achieve all they can based on their abilities, without regard for their station in life. Others are determined to preserve the status quo, with the noble families on top and members the working class kept strictly in their place.

Megere's life is complicated when her family decides that she and her eligible cousins and siblings should all participate in the coming Season, in the hopes of finding suitable marriage partners. Megere has no objections to getting married, some day - and she has strong feelings for several potential suitors. But she is also determined to pursue her calling as a healer... if only circumstances would stop conspiring to entangle her in dangerous Imperial politics!

Memory of Morning is full of vivid, believable characters. You'll identify and sympathize with some, admire others, and be furious with the villains! The plot takes several interesting twists and turns and provides a very satisfying sense of completion at the end.

All in all, a marvelous tale!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Treasure August 15, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Susan Sizemore's book, Memory of Morning is a real page-turner. As I read it, I felt the salt, sea air of her journeys. The romance was very nice and mellow. The trials and tribulations felt so real. It was just my cup of tea. It is an alternate universe that only enhanced the action and romance. A must-read for anyone who likes romances.

The "For the fans of George R. R. Martin" in the description is a bit of pandering to the popularity of Game of Thrones. This is a great book, but very different in tone, scope and themes from the Game of Thrones Series.

Don't read this expecting the harsh, brutal and often unjust world of Game of Thrones. This book has a "happy ending", is a self-contained love story and doesn't delve too deeply into its fairly straightforward themes. It's basically a light blend of some of my favorite reads: Patrick O'Brien's Aubry/Maturin series and Pride and Prejudice combined with a sugary coating for a modern romance reader. Perfect summer reading for me!

(Don't get me wrong: I have loved Game of Thrones since the first book was published ages ago, but sometimes I need a bit of brain-candy.)

At times the world-building is a bit gratuitous (with uniqueness for the sake of being different). But I suppose it sets the author up well for more novels set in this world. (e.g., Is a book about the heroine's older brother in the making?) Since I enjoyed this book, that's fine with me!

The heroine is charmingly direct and well-realized. The hero is intriguing. And the supporting characters are lovely and interesting. It's also well-written and well-paced. All-in-all a very fun, entertaining read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really hoping there will be more! March 11, 2012

I was so unhappy to learn that - so far - this is the only book Ms Sizemore has written about this world!

The main character is an intelligent, ambitious, vivacious young woman who loves her family. Her parents and siblings are ahead of their time in their attitudes and professions, which makes them enemies in high places. How Meg navigates through the difficulties that plague her makes for an enthralling read.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not a romance, but a long-winded fantasy.
