Book Description

October 1, 2003
Returning to his childhood home was supposed to bring peace for Poldarn. But it was not to be. The island proved no sanctuary from the ghosts of his past, or from the demons that stalk his dreams. Instead, he has unearthed yet more lies, betrayals, and enemies from his former life. But with each fresh discovery, Poldarn is coming ever closer to the reality of his shadowy origins. One by one, the fragmented memories and obscure clues are falling into place, forming a truth he cannot escape, a past he cannot deny, and a history that may be more than he—or anyone else—can bear. This is the brilliant conclusion of K.J. Parker’s compelling Scavenger Trilogy.

Editorial Reviews

Review

'This is exactly what the fantasy genre needs. Mature, confident prose from a talented writer . compelling, assured, intelligent - five stars' SFX 'indescribably addictive . I can heartily recommend both Shadow and Pattern to fantasy connoisseurs who prefer a little more bite from their fiction . Do try this most excellent of sagas. I really don't think you'll be disappointed.' THE ALIEN ONLINE

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb, Awesome...Worth It!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, May 14, 2005
This review is from: Memory (Scavenger Trilogy, Book 3) (Paperback)
I wish i could rate this book even higher than 5 Stars. The ending is superb. It couldn't have been better. This series and I have had a time together. I got kinda bummed out with book two and starting book three was tough. I had thoughts of not even finishing it. But I'm so glad I did. This trilogy shot from the bottom of my favorite series to the top...just under King's Dark Tower Series. If you've read and liked books one and two, you will not be disappointed at all with book three. It was worth my time and money. I recommend this series to anyone wanting an intriguing, indepth read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great end to a great series, January 22, 2006
This review is from: Memory (Scavenger Trilogy, Book 3) (Paperback)
Yes, this book was pretty much the same as the first two installments. Which makes it a pretty darn good book.
The problem which keeps this one at 4 stars, was it was just a bit too... long. While the other books, especially the second, had passages that waxed into long descriptions and technical natured discussion (in this book, it is lengthy passages relating to working at a bell foundry) in this novel they were just far too long and far too plentiful.
I could have done with a much lesser amount of the dry "every day working" bits in this story.
They made this book drag a little, where the first two flew by for me.

However, the end of the story was all I could have hoped for and more. Not at all predictable, much is explained, and much of it shocked me quite a bit!

All in all an excellent series, and quite not what I expected.

3.0 out of 5 stars more of the same, October 13, 2005
This review is from: Memory (Scavenger Trilogy, Book 3) (Paperback)
"Memory" is the continuing adventures of Poldarn, a man who has amnesia. Poldarn has decided that he does not wish to remember his past, as what hints he has gotten are all pretty appalling. Alas, his past is not so eager to forget about him.

For myself, I found "Memory" to be far too similar to the first book in this series, "Shadow". The prose is more polished and the metafores more subtle, but otherwise the content is just more of the same.

If you've not read another book in this series, you'll greatly enjoy this work -- 5 stars. Otherwise, while pleasant, "Memory" offers nothing new.
