4.0 out of 5 stars a blues standard, November 4, 2000
This review is from: Memphis Monday Morning (Audio CD)
Menphis Monday Morning is a great song! A blues classic. The entire CD is very good, but the song Menphis Monday Morning is the highlight of the recording. Bobby Bland is the real thing, I saw him in Atlanta about five years ago( he opened for Dr. John) it was one of the best shows I have ever seen. It was very pure rhythm and blues, I felt like I was seeing Duke Ellington or Miles, I mean this guy is the real thing. Nobody is wearing raybans or trying to get the "look" just some great musicians really playing their butts off. When he hit with "turn your lovelight on", well, as you can already tell, I'm just not that good with words to explain how good it was, they were on fire. I would recomend this CD and also his classic "one step from the blues" and there is a greatest hits or best of which is well worth buying. But please if you get the chance go see him in person. Also, it would be interesting to hear some jazz and r&b vocalists do a interputation of Menphis Monday Morning" Etta James,Cassandra Wilson and Delbert McClinton come to mind. If you like the Blues and old school r&b I would recomend buying this recording. Marty martybeat@aol.com

This is the Blues ! Have purchaced about 7 of his cd's, All are great. If u get a chance to see him in concert, book it. Hate to say that, cus I might not get a seat. If BB King is the king of the blues, than Bobby is the voice of the blues....

5.0 out of 5 stars Memphis Monday Morning, July 29, 2008

First, you should know that this review is completely biased as I am a Bobby "Blue" Bland fan of more than 40 years. Having said that, this CD is one of his best efforts ever. He's in fine voice and his interpretation and phrasing are outstanding. The title song makes you want to just curl up in bed and spend the rest of the rainy day in tears. Not all of the songs are what Steve Harvey calls "brown liquor songs" however; cuts 1, 6 and 7 will make you dance and cut 3 will make you laugh. As usual, Bobby is surrounded by excellent musicians and the tight horn arrangments really complement his style. My least favorite is cut # 10, "Looking For Some Tush" the last word of which Bobby pronounces as though it rhymes with lush instead of push.
