5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic collection of Rarities, October 16, 2010
This review is from: Memphis Shakedown: More Jug Band Classics (Audio CD)
For anyone who like myself has been trying to piece together a collection of classic jugband music this and its companion set "Memphis Jug Band with Gus Cannon's Jug Stompers" from JSP are a godsend. Together they collect all of the Memphis Jug Band and Gus Cannon sides that are extent. Seven sides from the 1932 Champion/Gennett MJB session remain untraced, so they aren't here, nor is the material that has been collected on "Memphis Sanctified Jug Bands 1928-1930" where Will Shade and company back up singing preachers.
The collection includes all the great Noah Lewis sides both solo and with his own jugband featuring Sleepy John Estes. (Noah Lewis was Gus Cannon's harp player and wrote and sang some of the Jug Stompers most poignant songs); Jack Kelly's West Memphis Jug Band; Jed Davenport & His Beale Street Jug Band; the Memphis Minnie/Memphis Jug Band sides; as well as several other Memphis players in the same vein. It also has tracks that collect the post-jug band work of Charlie Burse, and another Estes group, the Delta boys, which features tub bass and kazoo. I highly recommend this set for anyone serious about jug band music.
