5.0 out of 5 stars The Mountaineering Classic, February 13, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
One of the great sagas of 20th century climbing began in 1930 when eccentric globetrotter Joseph Rock, after having surveyed a remote stretch of mountains in Szechwan (Sichuan), declared the peak Minya Konka (Gongga Shan) the highest peak in the world, with an altitude of over 30,000 feet.

This claim, of course, needed to be verified. And the mountain needed to be climbed. (As might be expected, getting through China in the 1930's was, for these westerners, a lengthy adventure in itself.)

This book is the story of a small team of 4 climbers who reached the summit in 1932. Released in a revised edition by The Mountaineers in 1980, this edition is a particularly complete source, with additional contributions by climbers Terris Moore and Jack Theodore Young.

Trade paperback, 324 pp, 38 pp of b&w photos, incidental illustrations, a map, and 4 Appendices. Index. 4 page annotated Bibliography.
