Book Description

June 9, 1997
Even the smartest women play dumb when it comes to relationships. They make the same mistakes over and over again; they fall for the same kind of guys; and they cry to the same friends when, inevitably, the relationship goes sour. Bestselling authors Steven Carter and Julia Sokol have written the book for every woman who would like to be smarter when it comes to affairs of the heart--Men Like Women Who Like Themselves.

With the candor, compassion, and expert advice that marked their bestseller What Smart Women Know, Carter and Sokol provide the essential insights all women need to know in order to forge healthy, committed relationships. Based on the simple but powerful notion that a lasting relationship means putting yourself first, that true love can only spring from self-love, Men Like Women Who Like Themselves is a trove of relationship wisdom for today's woman.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Self-help authors Carter and Sokol (What Smart Women Know) provide a handbook for the average woman, revealing secrets the "Smartest Women" know about meeting, dating and, if they can absorb enough Smart-isms, mating. The authors have basically strung together a series of bullet points that hop unnervingly from topic to topic, and they turn the stuff of human emotions into silly and irritating cliches. Thus, the fact that men are plagued by many of the same insecurities as women, and often have difficulty expressing feelings of vulnerability, becomes: "Just because he looks like he has everything wired doesn't mean he won't get strung up." Sound advice on how to recognize a potentially abusive man, when to seek counseling and when and how much to talk about past relationships with a new partner is submerged in a sea of bad puns and thematically unrelated case histories. If the authors' aim was to be lighthearted, their end result is an insultingly reductive look at the infinitely complex, often difficult and sometimes wonderful ways people come together. From Library Journal

In their latest book, best-selling authors, "relationship experts," and lecturers Carter and Sokol counsel women seeking success in male-female relationships. Writing in the humorous, easy-to-understand style of their earlier work, What Smart Women Know (Evans, 1990), the authors offer maxims ("If you think men and women are from different planets, you need a stronger telescope. If you think all men are the same, you need a stronger microscope"), illustrative anecdotes, and down-to-earth advice designed to promote self-esteem. Common myths are exposed (e.g., "Myth: A couple who is in love shares everything. Fact: Real love means being able to say 'I respect your separateness' ") and directives for effective communication given. Given the authors' past popularity, this work is recommended for most popular self-help collections in public libraries.?Lucille M. Boone, San Jose P.L., Cal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Good Advice!, August 1, 2000
This review is from: Men Like Women Who Like Themselves: (And Other Secrets That the Smartest Women Know) (Paperback)
I learned a lot from this book. It explains exactly what to and not to say to a man on a first, second or third date. It also lets women know what scares a man away. There are several scenerios given throughout the book. And I bet if you're having trouble keeping a guy's interest, you WILL see yourself somewhere in this book & find out what mistakes you may making.

5.0 out of 5 stars I opened this book and couldn't put it down, July 30, 1999
By A Customer
Reading this book gave me not only a lot of insight into how to approach the initial meetings of new possible significant friendships, what to be observant of and what's important, but also showed me situations that I could relate to in my past relationships. I could relate to so many of the "What smart Women don't do" topics as part of my past history. I felt good to see how far I have made progress since reading "What Smart Women Know". This book takes it further into what to do once you have found that special relationship and what is normal relating and what is unacceptable. I feel I've received a lot of valuble lessons from this book and would love to give a copy to every Women friend of mine. I read it in one full evening.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Advice, January 9, 2003
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Men Like Women Who Like Themselves: (And Other Secrets That the Smartest Women Know) (Paperback)
This a powerful book. I found it to be more influential than most relationship books. Though I was a bit uncomfortable at first with the untraditional layout - the information is not organized into respective chapters and seems to flow from one subject to another continuously - it was that very conversational style that seemed to drive the authors' points home in a most profound way. Some of those points were:

-To get to the end you must start from the beginning; think about connecting with men before you start thinking about marriage/babies
-everyone makes mistakes, so give men a chance
-husband's usually don't resemble magazine models
-abuse is abuse
-behaviors and conversations to avoid on dates

The tone of the book was more practical than spiritual. The authors do not present "following your heart" and "soul mates" as precepts. For a read along those lines I would recommend mystical relationship books by Deepak Chopra.

This book was also quick and easy read without being too wordy and conceptual; great if you're a busy person.
