Book Description

January 1995
These moving true stories of discipline dedication self-sacrifice and self-empowerment capture the struggle of 10 African-Americans who made a name for themselves in the martial arts. During the 1950's and 1960's, martial arts practice was struggling for respectability in this country and African-Americans were struggling for equal rights under the law. Here in their own words are the stories of the black pioneers who have been instrumental in shaping the course of martial arts in America.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Here's a unique title: an oral history of black American pioneers in the martial arts which recognizes the untold contributions of these pioneers. Don't expect a panoramic history, though: ten individuals are slated for feature in this autobiographical review, which tells their stories in their own words. -- Midwest Book Review

5.0 out of 5 stars African-American contribution to martial arts in the US, May 4, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Men of Steel Discipline: The Official Oral History of Black Pioneers in the Martial Arts (Paperback)
This is an excellent source for the unknown contributions to African-Americans in martial arts. Sensei Hinton showcases individual martial artists and shows how it fits in the big picture in bringing martial arts into American Pop culture.
Another source that discusses the African influences in martial arts in general is "African Presence in Early Asia" Edited by Ivan Van Sertima.
Thanks and enjoy.
