5.0 out of 5 stars Maybe the perfect American pop record, January 1, 2002

The Fellows aren't afraid of swiping inspiration from all over the musical landscape. Successfully looting the last 50+ years of pop music, they managed to harness everything that was ever cool, exciting, and fun in a way few (if any) bands have. It all gets unleashed on this disc: rock-a-billy, punk, pop, country all get the Fellows' special treatment. Listen to this album once; you'll be singing along and grinning as much as the band themselves by the end of your first listen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Did I mention, nobody gets a 5 star ( Ooop's ), November 5, 2001

Ok Ok, It's all true....

The apex (if you will) the height of Pop music is reached right here. Simply slide your mouse over and select the "add to my cart" button.

Your musical road map will change forever, you will run to the store and buy a beat-up old guitar and sit for weeks playing this over and over, giddy with laughter as you lose your job but uncover the secrets of E A and C, oh yeah and G too (for the bridge)

In other words it's simple, it's beautiful, it's funny it's timeless. No tricks no fancy production. A++ material

To my entire generation these guys should have been the "Beatles" to my circle of 20 or so friends the "Young Fresh Fellows" were our Beatles...it's that important (In "86" I was 21)

5.0 out of 5 stars The great unknown classic, June 12, 1998

It probably won't happen until the great reckoning, but at some point the music buying public will be punished for neglecting one of history's great rock and roll bands. From Seattle before and after it was cool to be so, the YFF's peak with this magnificent collection of pop, country, punk and even a dash of jokey ska/funk. Brilliant lyrics and rich hooks. If you buy one album this year, you should have bought this one in 1987. They need some beer money.

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic Indie Classic, October 17, 2004
This review is from: The Men Who Loved Music (Audio CD)
Fun, fun, fun. Melding bar band punch with eclectic pop/rock influences, "The Men Who Loved Music" gives just enough smooth with the ragged. Here The Fellows have yet to leave the goofiness for grandeur. Note that the punk elements here never eclipse the pop elements. It's just another flavor in the mix. It's not perfect since the pure sweet rush gets sort of unfocused but,the number of "hits" overall is hard to deny. Recommended for Sloan fans and those miss the true variety you could find in early indie. This is working class intellgencia rock before irony became a selling point. Just about ideal.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Young Fresh Fellows' "White Album", January 16, 1999

Essential for any lover of witty, and sometimes goofy rocknroll. If you are a YFF newbie, GET THIS ONE FIRST! If you listen to it and are NOT hooked to the YFF, then give me a call and i will /personally/ tell you how much of a humorless dullard you are. How could you NOT love a band who writes lyrics like "When she comes home from church, she gotta take off her pants/That's what I like about Amy Grant.../When she first met Jesus, she didnt know what to say/So he gave her a guitar and he told her what to play/He said 'Amy, dont you play a lot of jazz, dont you play none of that hard rock/What the people want to hear is pure unadulterated schlock'" or "When the girls get here, we'll talk about integrated circuits and things, to show them how smart we are"...Everyone whom ive played tracks from this CD to all fell in love with the YFF in a very short time. One of them only listened to Led Zeppelin before hearing the YFF and becoming addicted. The YFF are *that* powerful. Be sure to wear safety goggles and cover your fishtank when listening to this CD for the first time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clever, catchy, and funny...why aren't they more popular?, May 25, 2001
This review is from: The Men Who Loved Music (Audio CD)
Continuing in the same vein as the Young Fresh Fellows' first two albums, this record shows a band obsessed not only with music, but with television (check out "TV Dream," the mention of Mr. Ed in the "Happy Death Theme," or the hidden track) and other essential aspects of American culture, all explored with an obvious sense of humor. The biggest hit here is a song making fun of Amy Grant, but there are also lyrics about Hank Wiliams, Karen Carpenter, Elvis, Ringo Starr, and others, not to mention plenty of songs that do not really fit the concept, including the hilarious "When The Girls Get Here" and the noisy and amusing "I Don't Let The Little Things Get Me Down." This is one of the best albums by a great but little-known band. If you can find a copy..., be sure to check it out.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the greatest albums of all time, February 23, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Men Who Loved Music (Audio CD)
The Fellows' 3rd album (and a great bonus EP!), and possibly their best, though it's a toss-up with their 1st and 2nd ones. Highlights? It's ALL highlights! But my personal faves have to be Get Outta My Cave and When The Girls Get Here, classic songs that have permeated the lives and memories of friends, family, etc. From the Refreshments EP tacked on here, Beer Money and Back Room of the Bar are YFF gems. Enjoy - and my eternal thanks to DN for turning me on to these guys.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE GIRL WHO LOVED YFF MUSIC, April 28, 1999

Is it possible for anything to make Mondays not suck ?? Well it is if you buy this Young Fresh Fellows cd. I've always liked them, but only owned their newer cds. Now that I have their first couple of releases, I feel like I am a better person. "TV Dream" is hilarious and any band that has their own themes is ok with me. Also, living in Nashville, I appreciate anyone poking fun at Amy Grant.
