Editorial Reviews

Review

Edward Sri is a gifted teacher and an equally talented writer. This book shows why. He breaks open Karol Wojtyla's great text, Love and Responsibility, in a way that's clear, engaging and very practical for the challenges of daily life. --Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M., Archbishop of Denver

...a terrific contribution to our growing understanding of the real-life implications of Pope John Paul II's thought. In this immensely relevant and readable book, Edward Sri offers sensible, nuanced guidance on some of the trickiest spects of relationships between the sexes. Readers in all walks of life will benefit from Sri's clarity and common sense. --Colleen Carroll Campbell, author, The New Faithful: Why Young Adults Are Embracing Christian Orthodoxy

Format: Paperback
The author, an associate professor at the Augustine Institute in Denver, wrote Men, Women and the Mystery of Love as an outgrowth of his own study and teaching on John Paul II's book Love and Responsibility. His goal was to shine a light on the pope's view of love and sexuality and show its relevance to everyday life. The work is suitable for lay people, priests, and religious in groups and as individuals. Each chapter focuses on an aspect of the pope's thinking and provides questions for reflection and suggestions for further reading. Topics include friendship; the proper role of emotions; how contraception harms love; and building trust, intimacy, and a mature love.

The chapter on building trust opens with the current divorce rates and data showing that only about one in ten married couples in the U.S. say they experience emotional intimacy in their relationship. In a great marriage, Sri writes, the spouses experience a deep personal communion with each other. John Paul II identified the underpinnings of this communion as "mutual self-giving love and the accompanying sense of responsibility for each other as gift." Sri addresses the topic with examples from the Garden of Eden, his own marriage, and two modern-day couples in crisis. This final story leads to a discussion of mature and immature love. In a summary chart, Sri describes mature love as primarily objective; looking outward; creating confidence and serenity; and self-giving. Reflection questions ask how our words and deeds break down trust and how we can maintain a truly loving attitude without approving faults of the other.

I have given this book to dozens of individuals and couples. It has been very effective in helping people to understand the Church's teaching with regard to human sexuality. I cannot recommend it more highly.

I had seen Dr Sri speak at a Catholic conference I attended with a friend. He was selling this book at the conference and my friend recommended the book, which she already owned. I asked if I could just borrow hers and she said "No - you need your own." And she was totally right. JPII was a brilliant man and Dr Sri breaks down Love and Responsibility in a very understanding way. And if you take everything in it to heart, it will change the way you view friendships, dating, and all relationships. It was so good that I purchased 2 more books for friends - I truly believe everyone should read this if you're not ready to tackle JPII's original. This book is highly recommended!

Edward Sri very effectively captures profound concepts from the writings of John Paul II and provides the reader with useful, clear, and beautiful descriptions of living virtuously. He presents "the uncorrupt nature of masculinity and femininity" in God's creation and a formula as we strive in our struggle toward this ideal. This book is a voice of virtuous hope in contrast and in answer to our modern times of selfish darkness.

This is one of my favorite books, and I am constantly buying it to give as gifts to all my friends. It's a must read for ALL AGES.

This is really a tangible version on JPII's 500 pg book on Love and Responsibility. It has a great discussion questions after each chapter and references (specifically pages) to JPII's book on Love and Responsibility if you wanted to check it out yourself.

It touches on the subjects of love in terms of family/friendship and romance, physical and emotional chastity, modesty, and little bit of theology of the body. All of it is in line with the Catholic Church, yet you don't have to be Catholic to read it. The book paints a clear picture of what love should look like and it's ultimate message is that real love is completely self-less.

Another book I recommend with this is Theology of the Body by Christopher West, which is another tangible read of JPII's own Theology of the Body. All of JPII's works are honestly too good to miss out on.

An excellent interpretation of JPII's Love and Responsibility. Great, insightful information on the relationship between men and women and why it is so sacred. I also like the questions at the end of each chapter which help to see whether you have really absorbed the information. My husband is now reading it, when he is done I plan to read while taking notes along with answering the questions. Also, it is an easy read with great examples to support the major points. Enjoy and God bless!
