The aim of Men of the Word is to paint a biblical portrait of manhood. Rather than appealing to a culturally driven, testosterone imbibed view of what makes a man's man, Men of the Word (MOTW) defines qualities of masculinity from biblical biographies. Nathan Busenitz, a former personal assistant to John MacArthur, and current faculty member of The Master's Seminary, edits the book. A staff member of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California writes each chapter.

Using the lives of men such as Abraham, Solomon, Josiah, Elijah, Timothy, David, Daniel, Nehemiah, Peter, Elisha, and Paul, MOTW biblically chronicles God's expectations for men. While the focus of and a few of the applications within the book are primarily for men, these character studies are actually well-written expositions that would benefit anyone.

The qualities highlighted in MOTW include what it means to live by faith, find satisfaction in God, treasure God's word, pray, worship, fight temptation, repent of sin, stand firm against compromise, lead with courage, love your spouse, shepherd your family, work hard, love your enemies, share the gospel, love the church, and pursue purity. The book also contains some brief questions related to each chapter that would make the book well suited for a small group or men's Bible study discussion. If readers desire quick references to biblical passages addressing any of the main subjects of the book, a "Biblical Reference Guide" is included at the end.

Highlights for me include John Martin's chapter on worship. With John being an accomplished musician, it was refreshing to see worship defined beyond music. His chapter describes lessons from Israel's hymn writers and is an excellent description of biblically driven worship.

I was really excited to receive this book from the publisher. Many character studies of biblical men are often nothing more than launching pads for all types of moral eisegesis but this is not the case with Men of the Word. Each chapter focuses on a key individual from Scripture with God-centered exhortations focused on the theme of "real men" (e.g., Real Men Find Satisfaction in God: Lessons from the Life of Solomon by Rick Holland). Every chapter is written by a different pastor from the staff of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, CA with a forward by John MacArthur who is the long-time preaching pastor at GCC. There is also two helpful appendices. The first by Bill Shannon is entitles "Real Men Pursue Purity" which is a succinct and helpful guide to helping men fight the battle of sexual purity. I am already using this appendix as a hand-out for men in my church. The second appendix is an excellent study guide useful for personal study or small groups. It is this resource that makes this book ideal as a discipling tool for men in the local church. There is also a biblical reference guide at the end which could be used as a Scripture memory aid for personal or group studies. I highly recommend this book to any pastor, teacher, or man who wants to be challenged to grow as a man of God and be useful in the Lord's mission.

"What is God's calling for men? What character qualities does He value? What is biblical manhood, and how is it cultivated? The answers to those all-important questions are found in the lives of men of the Bible--men like Abraham, Joseph, Moses, Joshua, Daniel, and Paul. Every one of them struggled with the same issues faced by men today...which makes them highly relevant role models that define what a real man is from God's perspective." This book, edited by Nathan Busenitz and including contributions from a long list of men associated with Grace Community Church, seeks to challenge men on many different fronts related to work, worship, family, marriage and so on. It is appropriate for reading on your own or as part of a group study.

Our Men's Group went through this book and we thought it was very good. Its short chapters, to the point encouragement and biblical underpinning was just what we needed. We also liked the key verses in the back which we picked one to memorize each week and the built in questions which made it easy to share the load of leading and find new potential leaders for other areas of our church. The only downside might be a few chapters came off as a bit preachy and not understanding the real life that everyday guys live. That was only a very few though. Strongly biblical as you would expect from the staff that John MacArthur heads.

I found this to be a excellent book for use with a bible study. Very good reading and discussion was excellent in the bible study I am involved with. Bought the kindle version and sent the paperback to my brother in law so he could read it also.
