This soundtrack is as powerful and as realistic as the movie. If you are a fan of true-to-life, tell it like it is hip-hop; then this is a definite must have for your collection. 3.0 out of 5 stars Menace II Society Soundtrack
I checked out this soundtrack recently after rewatching one of my favourite gangster movies "Menace II Society". The opening track is Spice 1's standout "Nigga Gots No Heart" a dark banging track. Without a doubt the highlight of this release for me is the next track the theme song, MC Eiht's "Streiht up Menace" a truly classic cut which I never get tired of hearing. MC...

This soundtrack is as powerful and as realistic as the movie. If you are a fan of true-to-life, tell it like it is hip-hop; then this is a definite must have for your collection. Being that I grew up in the type of environment depicted in the movie and on the album, I could really relate to this soundtrack. Something that is rare in the oh-so commercialized and cross over crazy hip-hop industry. This album focuses on and accurately depicts what really goes on in the inner cities; just as the movie. I highly recommend both the soundtrack and the video! I guarantee you, you will not be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars missing one piece, October 16, 2005
This review is from: Menace II Society: The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
Great soundtrack except for one song they left out. At the start of the movie as the camera passes over the projects Ice Cube's "ghetto bird" is playing, which is the best song they had in the movie. Other than that, great soundtrack.

4.0 out of 5 stars One Dope Soundtrack From Nine-Tre (Rating: 8 out of 10- -4.0 stars), November 15, 2007

More than likely, you've seen the movie "Menace II Society", and heard many of the songs from the movie. The soundtrack is a great representation of some of the artist's great work on a movie soundtrack. Most of them are related to the actual movie, so that is a plus, but at the same time many of the songs here sound like they were scrapped off their normal albums and ended up here.

The pros on this album are songs such as "Trigga Gots No Heart" by Spice 1, and MC Eiht's most popular track "Straight Up Menace". "Only The Strong Survive" is, what I believe, one of Too Short's best songs. Later on in the soundtrack, Pete Rock and CL with the help of the YG'z go hardcore (and more explicit than the normal rhyme style) on "Death Becomes You", which I believe is the soundtrack's best song. The R&B song "Unconditional Love" by Hi-Five is excellent, as the song talks about relationships. It reminds me of late 80's/early 90's R&B. Then KRS-One and DJ Premier team up for "P Is Still Free" which also appears on Return of the Boom Bap LP. U.G.K. comes in for the groove type sound "Pocket Full Of Stones".

The cons on this album are songs like "Stop Lookin' At Me" by the Cutthroats and Guru of Gang Starr (who outshines everyone on that song). That track is basically forgettable. And also I'm not feeling DJ Quik's "Can't F Wit A *****", although he JFN and KK of 2nd II None diss Everlast from House Of Pain. Other songs here that weren't mentioned weren't bad songs, but they weren't too great to stand out in my opinion.

Overall, "Menace II Society" is an excellent movie and an excellent soundtrack. This was when soundtracks actually had dope songs on them, not just old rehashed or weak songs that come on soundtracks today. I tell you, they just don't make them like they used to anymore. But this is one I highly recommend to those who enjoyed the movie or who like mid 90's gangsta rap. Peace!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best soundtrack of all time, August 20, 2004
This review is from: Menace II Society: The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
No doubt about it, from start to finish, this is a classic for anybody's collection. I can remember back in the spring of '93 when the movie came out and it was a classic as well but the soundtrack matches up to what the movie was and this soundtrack sent a big message to a lot of us about what goes on the inner cities today. This was rap music at it's best from Spice 1 to DJ Quik. There will not be a soundtrack like this ever again that addresses what goes on in our neighborhoods. So add this to your collection if you still love the true gangster rap, west coast fan(like myself), or just want to hear a great soundtrack.

3.0 out of 5 stars Menace II Society Soundtrack, February 18, 2004
This review is from: Menace II Society: The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
MC Eiht's lyrics and the beat to this one are outstanding. Kenya Gruv delivers a decent love ballad on "Top of the World". More hardcore banging tracks like Da Lench Mob's "Guerillas Ain't Gangstas" and Pete Rock and CL Smooth's "Death Becomes You" follow. While the young sounding The Hi-Fives "Unconditional Love" is a good harmless happy sounding love song. The closing track is Spice 1's "Trigga Gots No Heart", similar to the opening track but better, one of my favourite Spice 1 tracks. Its been eleven years so obviously some of these tracks are dated, however this soundtrack compliments the movie nicely. I would only recommend this one to big Menace II Society fans (who would most likely have it by now) and people looking for MC Eiht's best track. 3.5.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still one of my favorite CDs, August 14, 2000

This CD is raw. And the movie is awfully raw....

Considering the slant upon which rap and black culture has taken in these seven years since this album was released (and the movie for which it was made...) it doesn't surprise me that this record still hangs in my mind as the best of its genre. Almost every song on it remains a classic-- thoough some of the more positive R & B numbers that are there could stand to be stripped....

Taken for what it is, a frank and dark look at culture, this is as good as it gets. If you're newer to hiphop but wandering what exactly was going on in the early ninties, get this disc and listen to what Guru, Too $hort, Ant Banks and the rest of them were doing before rap became about Eminem's "homosexuals and Vicodin" or the rests champagne and big screen TVs....

This is sorta like the Louis-Ferdinand Celine version of rap music....
