OPM, they're good fun,
By "tidal18" (Hilton Head Is, SC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Menace to Sobriety (Audio CD)
Well, first-off, I got this album for free-I work at Wave 106.9 in Hilton Head-so i can't say it was the best money I ever spent. Anyway, this CD contains, as other reviewers have said, a wide variety of music, which makes the whole album basically a good one. It's got rap, punk, ska and the like, but also contains songs with awesome acoustic rock'n roll riffs, which many people say reminds them of Everlast. This album is almost completely original, except for a few stolen riffs from obscure artists. Because of songs like Brighter Side, Better Daze, Dealerman, Reality Check, Fish Out of Water, and El Capitan this CD deserves a good spin in your player. As one who sees all kinds of music come and go, this disc is a keeper and one you shouldn't get sick of even after 72 spins a week. Also, after seeing them live in concert, I became even more impressed when they got a guy who was already having way too much fun to down a bowl of Captain Crunch with Captain Morgan's as the choice milk--this being the precursor to the song El Capitan. Needless to say the fun was regurgitated soon thereafter. Turn it up loud and have fun with this one.

Just about every type of music into one CD,
By A Customer
This review is from: Menace to Sobriety (Audio CD)
When I firsat bought this CD, it was because of Heaven Is A Halfpipe. If your looking for a bunch of songs that sound jsut like that, look elsewhere. But, if your looking for 10 different styles all put together into one CD. Every song could stand alone as a single. There's everything from rap, to skater punk, to ska. This is now one of my fave CDS. BUY!

Top Down or the Sunroof Up,

Great bumpin' boomin' grindin' music! This CD is being played in skate parks all across the country, and if I was Tony Hawk I would have the song HEAVEN IS A HALFPIPE played everytime I boarded. The music is a cross between Limp Bizkit and Smash Mouth. There isn't a bad song on the entire CD. From the first track, STASH UP, the interlude PUNANNY, the first single HEAVEN IS A HALFPIPE to the last song FISH OUT OF WATER, the cd is catchy without being trendy, gritty without being refried, and if you listen to it with headphones on you will pick up all these background sounds that become lost when played through speakers. Very hypnotic. Makes you want to cruise around in the jeep all day bumpin it with the top down. Yeeah boyeee.

The Real Deal,

After spending the day with the guys from the band while shooting their music video, I had the opportunity to see them perform live at the Trubador. I had already been listening to thier CD for about a month. I was absolutely blown away with thier performance.I got the chills watching them after joking around with them all day. They have a following of people that want to be free like them and just have a good time. These guys are going to be around for a while so if you haven't picked it up yet get it. Reality Check has the most hip hop sound to it and has a guy named Brady Wilmon on it. I think we will be hearing from this guy real soon also.

I bought this CD simply because of the title. I thought I'd get a good laugh. I'd heard Heaven is a Halfpipe, but wasn't totally impressed. It's good, but not great. Anyway, when I heard the album, all I could think was "Wow." The lyrics are thoughtful and humurous, the rifs are complex and original, and the beats keep you moving. I'm not usually a fan of skaters making music, but this album ROCKS! I'm an OPM convert all the way. El Capitan is an anthem for our generation.

Sublime for the new millenium,
By A.J. (Exeter, NH) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Menace to Sobriety (Audio CD)
When my friend first intorduced me to OPM's song "Heaven is a halfpipe", I was amazed, it was the best song ive heard in a while. So the day it came out we went and bought it. At home, i listened to it. I must say i was extremely impressed by the creativity and talent that was put into this album. Each song is unique, just like sublime, sort of a mix between reggae and ska with the occasional rapping. You couldnt really catagorize this with a specific kind of style of music. There are so many good songs on here, so i couldnt really name any song/songs that are the best. This also includes a few interludes, like Tool - Aenema (or however you spell that =P), only fewer of them and much funnier. If you like Sublime, Incubus, 311, or Everlast i suggest you look into this album, you might like it. Peace, love, and rock n roll =)

2 words - THE SHIT,
By A Customer
This review is from: Menace to Sobriety (Audio CD)
this CD is simply the shit. I love it, I haven't gone a day since I bought it without listening to it, and that was about oh... 15 days ago or so. Maybe 20. Something like that, but anyway, I had this playing in my friends car with his mom, and we played El Capitan for her, and she loved it! a 45 year old woman! I think thats reason enough to go buy this multi-genre CD. Its simply beautiful, baby!

Great Listening,

This is the best CD I have heard in a long while. It is composed of so many different styles of music (punk, latin, alternative, rap), it is amazing. Almost all of the tracks are really bumping, and I listen to this CD every day now. Track 3, 7, and 14 really stand out and I believe they are the best tracks on the album. Don't wait to buy this one.

Santa Cruz Barbecue,

Bong rippers unite. The new sound from the band sweeping the Bay Area will have you dreaming of yummy surf, fish tacos and cold cervezas. While not overly complex, OPM's sound is a mixture of revitalized ska and a hint of more traditional Bay Area sounds like Train and Stroke9. Don't expect to be moved to a higher level, but be sure to keep this CD handy for the Saturday barbecue with friends.

This is a must have CD. OPM is great and hit a home run with this first effort. Forthemasses and California Poppy are also excellent listening. Nobody does it quite like OPM. The BEST Suburban Noize Records band. I recommend all the OPM records. High quality stuff.
