This packed four cd set is a bargain in quantity and quality. Dohnanyi can be great, as in his Decca Mozart
symphonies 35-41, wind concerti and sinfonia concertnte k364 et al. I heard him live once with the Boston SO: a supremely dramatic and large-scaled Schubert Unfinished and a terrific Brahms Violin Concerto with Frank Peter Zimmermann.
He apparently loves Mendelssohn, recording some in Cleveland in addition to this VPO set. The VPO is a great
asset-technically adept and musically stunning- no bloat, fine solo work, great winds (not quite in the RCOA
league but...). #s 3-5 are especially good. The Scotch is quite atmospheric with quick but not rushed outer movements and a properly dark slow movement. The Italian is lighter, sunnier, more tender-not quite as driven as Szell, Munch, and Van Beinum but still vital and lovely. The symphony #1 adumbrates the Italian- similar in mood and texture but not qualitatively-yet

Dohnanyi is equally adept at the devorionally tinged Mendelssohn-he conducts it with conviction and power. I am not as drawn to it but that is not Dohnanyi's fault . His Reformation is excellent // Munch. I find the Walpurgisnacht cantata mixed and enjoy the Symphony #2 least.

The concluding overtures are superb. In toto an excellent set

Peers: Sawallisch #s 1-5: #3- Munch and Maag; #4-Szell,Munch, Klemperer,Maag (Bern SO), Van Beinum; #5-Munch, Haitink
Overtures: Maag, Szell, Klemperer, Chmura, Haitink, Ristenpart, Sawallisch. (I have not heard the Mendelssohn of Flor or Abbado)

There is no absence of great offers for these works (e.g., the BPO/Abbado set on DG). But this one was always at the top of many a collector's list. Recorded in the mid to late 70's, in the revered Sofiensaal, with producers and engineers that were the driving force into making Decca one of the best (if not THE best) label from 50s to 80s, when, in my estimation, commercial pressures and such (plus big corporation syndrome, I presume) produced a decline in values, on one side, while on the other, a plethora of various superb independents labels. That was a time of wonder, no doubt, and excitement for us collectors, even though I find these times so much better in terms of available repertoire (thanks, precisely, to the vision of a very few... Naxos, Hyperion, CPO...not the big labels).
I hope my intro implies the deserved quality of this set. In my estimation, some of these performances have not been bettered, The VPO shows its virtuosity throughout and I have not heard von Dohnanyi doing anything better since. Personally, I like the packaging as well. Nice to have the composer's face instead of the artist's, e.g., EMI/Rattle (ugh) which proves so ephemeral after all (the grayer Mr Rattle's hair gets) -- I wonder who can get lured by having Mr Rattle always on their first release's covers? -- Class, taste and commerce never went hand in hand, that's for sure.
Kudos for these wonderful series, Universal

I owned this set for some ten years now (I bought the 2 Double DECCA sets). It is still hands down the one and only Mendelssohn symphonies set that delights me even in those rainy days (feeling that I can't get from Karajan, Klemperer and even Abbado set). One of my top five classical music CDs.

Night years ago, when I was on a train travelling a thousand kilometers away from home to Shanghai and knowing that I would not be back for another half a year, it was the 3rd movement in No.4 that brought me to tears. Its serenade melody was so delightful that it sounded like a breeze that soothed through the green field and touched me gently. Forever remembered.

Superior performances and wonderful recorded sound. Also a very good bargain for a top label. Highly recommend this set of CDs.
