5.0 out of 5 stars The return of Sergio
In beginning this review I have to tell you the reader of this post that I LOVE this album. The explosive pounding opening of "Voodoo" that completly grabs and pulls you in. Listening to "Voodoo" I always feel like I've entered a new world of joyous rhythms. "Carnaval" is a continuation of that Brazilian party (just close your eyes and picture it). "Never Gonna Let You...

5.0 out of 5 stars The return of Sergio, November 5, 2006
This review is from: Mendes, Sergio (Audio CD)
In beginning this review I have to tell you the reader of this post that I LOVE this album. The explosive pounding opening of "Voodoo" that completly grabs and pulls you in. Listening to "Voodoo" I always feel like I've entered a new world of joyous rhythms. "Carnaval" is a continuation of that Brazilian party (just close your eyes and picture it). "Never Gonna Let You Go" was a nice first single, but for me dosen't
fit with the rest of the album. I love Leza Miller's vocals on "Never Gonna Let You Go", "Love Is Waiting" (my favorite track) and "Life In The Movies" (she also sings lead on the second verse of "Voodoo"). Joe Pizzulo
(who does the co-lead vocals on "Nevwe Gonna Let You Go" with Leza Miller)
dosen't jump off of the page as a vocalist for me. he is a very average (and I will say "Borring") singer. There is nothing exciting about his vocals (lucky enough he only has one co-lead spot on the album). In 1983-1984 the Sembello family were on top of the world writing, sining and playing on just about everything at the time following Michael Sembello's hugely successful "Maniac" from the "Flashdance" soundtrack. Michael sings lead on "My Summer Love" and Danny Sembello handles lead on "Rainbow's End". Oddly enough great vocalists Michael and Danny Sembello wrote one of the albums two jazz-laden instrumental tracks "Dream Hunter" a laid-back breezy kind of groove. the other instrumental is the Brazilian-jazz flavored "Si Senor" a nice close to a perfectly sequenced album. Perfect from start to the all-to-soon end.

5.0 out of 5 stars ~~~~~~~ Worth 20 stars Easily ~~~~~~~~, September 15, 2005
This review is from: Mendes, Sergio (Audio CD)
This 1982 self-titled album by Sergio Mendes is without a doubt one of his best by far; right at the peek of his career.
It opens up with the infectious batucada-like song "Voo Doo", and who doesn't remember one of the best ballads in the 80's: "Never Gonna Let You Go". Nevertheless, the best cut in the album to me is Sergio's rendition to a classic of Juan Carlos Calderon: "Si Senor".
This album has it all; Samba, Batucada, Ballads, Brazilian Jazz, Sergio Mendes, Gracinha Leporace, etc. etc.
Superb!!!!!!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars NICE SERGIO MENDES ALBUM, August 13, 2008
This review is from: Mendes, Sergio (Audio CD)
THE PURPOSE OF THIS REVIEW IS ONLY TO CORRECT THE TRACKS IN THE CD:

THE ALBUM NAMED SERGIO MENDES, WITH MR. SERGIO MENDES INSIDE A CAR, IN THE COVER, IS A REAL NICE SERGIO MENDES WORK BUT NOTICE THAT THE CORRECT LIST OF THE NAME OF THE SONGS IN IT (TRACKS), IS THE FOLLOWING:

1-VOODOO
2-NEVER GONNA LET YOU GO
3-MY SUMMER LOVE
4-CARNAVAL
5.RAINBOW......, and 4 more tracks

There are another 4 tracks (making a total of 9 tracks), not the ones displayed in the description of the audio cd with the cover of Mr.Sergio Mendes inside a car, and some peppers in the window of the car.
The tracks displayed in the page belong to another Sergio Mendes album named also "SERGIO MENDES", in which cover, appears Mr. Mendes standing alone with a white background and no other images and the first track of it is the song DAVY.
Enjoy both of them, the one containing DAVY is a wonderful album.

I bought this CD for the one song "Never Gonna Let You Go" but was pleasantly surprised to find that the whole CD was brilliant. A must have for any music collector.

3.0 out of 5 stars A little too POP for my tastes!, May 7, 2006
This review is from: Mendes, Sergio (Audio CD)
Of the seven or so albums that I own by Mendes, this self-titled release from '82 is my least favorite. Although Mendes scored the biggest hit of his career with "Never Gonna Let You Go," the album, as a whole, doesn't have enough of the "flava" of which I've become accustomed from such a versatile and gifted musician.

This one can only be recommended for those, like myself, that have followed Mendes's career from the 60's on, and this album is a keeper solely for collectors of his music.
