5.0 out of 5 stars Nice Violin
The violin is in perfect condition. I received all of the accessories as advertised. You even receive their Web page for maintenance and beginner's violin instructions! Wow! I didn't expect that! The case is very nice and sturdy. Remember to scratch the top of the rosin because it's smooth. You have to get it started. I did that and the rosin worked wonderfully! I...

3.0 out of 5 stars Beginner violin
My four year old daughter plays violin and I thought it would be great for both of us to learn together so I bought this one for me. I was pretty excited to get started but after about three weeks the violin started to fall apart. The E string became completely unraveled and the peg that holds it in place was to short and crooked. I had to take it in to get it repaired...

I made my first sounds on a violin! I am a musician, but I've never played the violin...ever! I am sooooo excited about my purchase. I couldn't be happier! I would write more but I want to get back to my Brand New Violin! You will be very happy if you purchase this violin. I know that I am. Thank you seller for such a wonderful transaction! Oh...did I mention the fact that the violin was shipped and received with lightening speed! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Instrument For Starting Out, December 29, 2011

This review is from: Mendini MV400 Ebony Fitted Solid Wood Violin + Extra set of Strings, Shoulder Rest, 2 Bows, Rosin & Case in 4/4 (Full Size)
My teacher was more than pleasantly surprised when I brought this MV400 to him for setup.. Which by the way, was nothing more than tuning the strings. The action, tuning pegs, bridge and sound post were all matched and aligned properly. My instructor was pleased to note the violin had inlaid purfling as well as a solid set of strings. In fact, the strings (according to his trained ear, not mine) are higher quality and sound than a "Red Label Super Sensitive" set I purchased. The bows are of various weight and quality, with one being a better option than the other in this starter kit. I do recommend purchasing a different rosin for a darker tone.

The instrument is not perfect, nor is it professional grade but for the beginning student (or in my case, the returning student) but a better value will likely not be found. I will be able to make it sing for a few years to come. My instructor labeled this violin as a "grade 7 or 8 level instrument." Not absolutely beginner, but for a new violinist with room to grow.

It meets its advertised quality but obviously isn't meant to be an orchestral instrument. With that, I give the Mendini MV400 4/5 stars for you or your beginning student violinist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great $75 dollar violin, November 21, 2011

So, I was kind of worried buying this, because with the other models of the same brand people were complaining about the product. Then I learned about violins. Every violin has a bridge that is held in place by string pressure, even the most expensive ones. It literally takes 2 seconds to do, and then you tune it. That was the second big complaint- "ugh, it's not even tuned when it arrives the day after I ordered it, plus it's in pieces, send me a good violin, thx, pls! OMG". Guess what, if you don't think you'll need to tune it, you don't deserve to buy it. Its a good starting violin. It's also a good deal.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic deal on a good violin, February 15, 2012
This review is from: Mendini MV400 Ebony Fitted Solid Wood Violin + Extra set of Strings, Shoulder Rest, 2 Bows, Rosin & Case in 4/4 (Full Size)
I purchased this same violin set directly from the retailer, through their site, and was surprised and impressed by what arrived. This violin is sold at such a low price that it's hard to imagine it has any level of quality - but it is a great instrument! Everything included came in good condition, other than some cosmetic issues on one side of the violin. And while the violin is certainly not for the advanced musician, I could see no reason that a beginner would need anything more.

After getting things set up, it played well, the sound was pleasing, and nothing seemed out of the ordinary, which surprised me, given the price. Even if/when I move on to a higher level instrument, this violin will have been worth the money.

The shipping was prompt and the condition on arrival was excellent.

The violin seems well made, sound is what I expected for a beginner violin. The case was fine for my needs and it was nice that it had extra strings, rosin, a shoulder rest, and a spare bridge included. I believe it to be good value for a begimmer violin.

The only con is that the bows are really cheap, both were not straight and had sideways movement in the frogs, They did ship me replacement bows quickly when informed but the replacements were of the same quality so went and purchased one elsewhere.

All in all, a good purchase of a beginner violin with the exception of the bow which will need to be replaced as the bow quality is almost as important as the violin when it comes to learning how to play correctly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful for price, January 27, 2012

While admittedly the violin did come with a scratch or two on the bridge, and was totally covered in dust, after cleaning (which I shouldn't have had to do) it, it looks great except the few scratches. They even give you instructions on how to set it up, etc. on their website. Can tell the bows are pretty low quality, but heck you get two of them. Turned my nose up at the case at first, I thought it was way too soft. But after messing around with it, it really is much sturdier than it looks. Not sure if I was supposed to receive this (it wasn't advertised in the bundle), but they gave me a free electronic tuner and set of batteries as well. With all the extra stuff, strings, shoulder rest, rosin etc., it really is a great deal!

ONLY reason I'm giving them 4/5 instead of 5 is because the condition they gave it to me in. Whole lot of bang for your buck, but puts a damper on your "new" product when it's covered in two layers of dust and some scratches you can't ever say you put there. However, for those looking for a starter/learning violin, this is the best deal I found after a week or so of searching, and that's not even including the tuner they gave me. Would buy again.

The case and the violin were much sturdier than I thought they would be (since I'm a beginner, I had a major fear of breaking the violin, haha). Everything fits in the case (hidden pockets and trap doors and such, haha). Lightweight. Tunes readily. Beautiful, clear sound; though, I did have trouble with the E string initially (but that's most likely just me, failing -_-"). Great purchase.

If you've ever rented a violin, through your child's school, this package if very comparable! Almost too comparable! I can't believe how much money we could have saved, over the years, if we just would have by-passed renting this product monthly. The case is sturdy, the violin is beautiful, and all accessories are included, as promised. I recommend getting an extra set of strings (even though some are included) since it seems the strings that ship with the violin seem to need to be changed out upon arrival. I'm very pleased with our purchase and highly recommend this to anyone!

4.0 out of 5 stars great starter violin, November 19, 2011

This review is from: Mendini MV400 Ebony Fitted Solid Wood Violin + Extra set of Strings, Shoulder Rest, 2 Bows, Rosin & Case in 4/4 (Full Size)
I am an adult just starting violin lessons with my two kids, ages 4 and 5. I play the piano, harp, dulcimer, and flute already. I bought this one based on the quality and nice sound of my children's violins, which sizes were the 1/16 and 1/8. I wanted something that would not be too expensive, so I wouldn't mind having it around the kids, and was pleased to see all the accessories that came with this package. As for the workmanship, it is not perfect: some glue globs are visible inside the violin, some uneven spots in the lacquer, and such. But, the sound is quite nice to my ears, and easier for me to play than I thought it would be. Why not 5 stars? The case zipper is very fragile, and will probably be broken easily. The case is not big enough for the shoulder rest to be on the violin and still close. That would be a big plus. The rosin that is included is cracked, and shattered into small pieces with the first use. Overall, I am pleased with this purchase, especially as a first instrument.
