Editorial Reviews

Review

Little written material remains from the Pennsylvanian Mennonite women of Lancaster county who reared large families and made homes for them, who measured their lives by their church's standards. Mennonite Women Of Lancaster County: A Story In Photographs From 1855-1935 is a vibrant collection of photographs which tell a remarkable story of "girl crowds", courting couples, multi-generational harvest/gardening work parties, high-spirited quilters, purposeful caregivers. Thoughtful, interpretive text provides both a structural background for the photos show, as well as stories and specific detail about what the pictures hold. Mennonite Women Of Lancaster County is a rare view of women's lives in an unusually robust community -- the Mennonites of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Mennonite Women Of Lancaster County is a personal treasure, full of exquisitely tender activity. -- Midwest Book Review

This is a fantastic overview of the simple Mennonite life. Not only did it have wonderful photographs it was a wealth of knowledge. I was so impressed. I not only learned more about Mennonite life but of life in general for a lady in that era. It made be proud to be a women. I have never seen such great photos all in one book. Very impressive!

Format: Paperback
As I "returned" to the family farm in NW Lancaster County in 1948, I was never taught much other than the *recent* history of my ancestors (4+ generations). I knew lots about my great great-father Daniel, but next to nothing about those who came before him. I was told by my dad that my ancestors came "for religious freedom" -- but never heard of the Taufer Movement from my dad. For my ancestors, religious freedom was a disagreement with Swiss Lutherans and required 2 yrs service in CH army. Now I have learned that 300 + years ago, a group in CH was formed to refuse to engage in military combat. I've learned plenty (and surprising) info from Joanne's book, (a school classmate until she left the public school for The Lancaster Mennonite School).

I look forward to learning more about how my 2013 values have been shaped by my ancestors more than 200 years ago.

The book has nice pictures of everyday life. Kinda "coffee table" and less on information but still a nice book.
