Help for Menopause,

This review is from: Menopause and Beyond: New Wisdom for Women DVD (DVD)
This DVD is a "Must See" for anyone male or female to help understand the process of menopause and beyond. It deals with so much more than just the physical symptoms, but actually helps us to understand and prepare for the second phase of life. It was enlightening and extremely informative. I was relieved to know I wasn't crazy for feeling selfish and after a lifetime of making my life about everyone else, the Dr. helped me to understand it was ok to include myself in the picture.

When I read the two star review of this woman's DVD I was baffled. I've followed her work for many years, long enough to see most of it validated by modern science. I decided to see what was up for myself and buy the program.
I LOVED every minute of this DVD and the extra footage on sexuality where she loses her more serious attire and comes out in a sexy cocktail dress is priceless! Dr. Northrup comes across not only as extremely well informed but as compassionate and very, very funny! She makes what would normally be a dry talk on the hormonal and emotional ups and downs of menopause sparkle. The program is divided into several parts dealing with emotions, bio-identical hormones, issues that promote weight gain and those surrounding post menopausal sexuality. She includes some affirmations to go along with each part. I wish she would have included them as an insert as I found them to be very uplifting. What the negative review calls "New Age-Pagan" bias is as best as I can figure a reference to Aphrodite in one of the affirmations. I personally enjoyed it. Most educated people know the colorful stories of the Greek and Roman gods and use them metaphorically. I certainly feel a lot sexier thinking of myself as the Roman Goddess of Love, than the biblical Sarah who is the only Christian reference I know of to a sexually active older woman. BTW, if you aren't up on bible history, Sarah managed to get pregnant at 99! That is not exactly something I'd look forward to!! Most of Dr. Northrup's "New Age" references are to the fact that stress can make you sick and even kill you, something modern medicine now acknowledges. She encourages women to work through whatever baggage they have left over from the past and reinvent themselves. I see nothing terribly odd about that and I have to wonder at this point if the reviewer even saw the film or just "has it in" for the good doctor and/or the whole New Age movement. I noticed that she like Dr Northrup is from Maine. Could this be a disgruntled patient? Every doctor has one. I want to add that this video is not about forcing your doctor into a corner with lots of weird tests. Most of what she advocates is no different than what my seventy year old neighbor down the street is getting from her woman internist. Medicine is no longer the paternalistic science it used to be. People are now willing to tell their physicians when something doesn't work. Drug companies no longer have our total trust and most people will find another doctor if he or she won't at least discuss information they bring to them regarding new treatment modalities. Dr. Northrup also makes the very valid point that we are all different with different reactions to drugs and disease, something that medicine has finally come to understand. This is especially true of the differences between men and women when it comes to heart disease, something she spends a segment on. Highly recommended!

Outstanding information,

I'm a man, but concerned about my mother as she's aging. I found this info very useful and inspiring. Unfortunately, in our American culture, if we don't think outside-the-box and stop following the crowd, we'll too soon be in a box! We all have to take our health in our own hands, because the food corporations, drug companies, and marketing firms want our money and don't care about the quality of our life. WE HAVE TO CARE. Great presentation by Dr. Northrup on PBS about how to track your own course for better health and happiness. Thanks
