Good resource, but don't buy it for your kindle,

There is a lot of information in this book. The information here is not new, but it is presented in an organized and fun format. Some may find there is too much information. For non-medical women, this is a great resource, but if you come from a medical background and know about hormones and endocrinology, you will find it over simplified. It's divided into different sections so you can skip around and read the part you are more interested in at the moment. The worksheets are useful and eye-opening. The idea of a 12 week planner is great, but to do that part of it will take some effort on your part, you will have to be committed to writing things down regularly. If you are expecting an easy, quick fix, or a new revelation, this book is not for you. If you want to understand the science behind what is happening to your body and what you can do about it, this is a great resource. It boils down to the basics: Eat right, exercise regularly and take care of yourself. ***IMPORTANT*** I would not recommend buying this book for your Kindle, there are worksheets and "diaries" which you won't be able to fill in and additionally, the charts and graphs cannot be read even when the font on the kindle is enlarged to the largest it can go. If you want to get the most out of this book, get the print version.

I just finished reading this book and can't recommend it enough. It's very readable with easy to reference chapters on specific topics such as hormones, exercise, diet and nutrition, etc. so you can look up whatever subject you're particularly interested in without having to go back and search through the entire book. It's packed with all the latest information about perimenopause and menopause and I appreciated the fact that it includes alternative as well as traditional treatments to relieve symptoms. It also goes a step further than many other books on the topic as it includes practical lifestyle suggestions to help you look and feel your best. The author's tone is informative, friendly and often humorous (let's face it...this subject could use a little humor.) Unique to this book is the 12 week menopause makeover planner which gives you the tools you need to make positive changes in your life. The author is inspiring and has made me realize it's time to start focusing on my health and well being. I can't wait to start my own menopause makeover.

The best book on menopause ever!,
By Dee Adams "aka Minnie Pauz" (Oxford, MI United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Menopause Makeover: The Ultimate Guide to Taking Control of Your Health and Beauty During Menopause (Paperback)
I've been reviewing books on my website [...] for over 10 years and I am convinced that The Menopause Makeover is the most complete compilation of information that I've seen.So many of the books are complicated when it comes to explaining about hormone therapy or alternative therapy, but Menopause Makeover has everything you need in an easy to understand format and down to earth "woman speak" language. We all know that menopause is not just about hot flashes and Staness gives us the whole picture, backed up with the support of a doctor who "gets it". The last 3rd of the book gives us a great selection of tools such as a planner, a contact list, medical forms, a food plan, shopping list and a meal diary. All in a great package! With this book as a guide through the hormone jungle and the humor of Minnie Pauz® you should have the best possible experience as you go through it all.

The Menopause Makeover turned my life around!,
By Jayne Hoogenberk (Toronto, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Menopause Makeover: The Ultimate Guide to Taking Control of Your Health and Beauty During Menopause (Paperback)
I read this book over the Christmas (2009) holidays to crib for an online makeover event where a group of us women pledged to follow the plan with the author's help and work with her to blog about our journey to health and happiness by following her 12 week program. The group started up in February 2010 and to date I personally have lost just over 25lbs. I have a few more to go before I start up on a maintenance plan, but I have to say that I haven't felt this good in many, many years.I was in a slump due to an injury and menopause combination and the pounds were packing on and I was at a loss for knowing what to do and where to turn. I was overwhelmed and depressed, and feeling miserable. Nothing I'd done in the past to lose weight was working, and I didn't know what to do other than give up and let menopause swallow me whole. But then I found the Menopause Makeover and turned my life around in just 8 steps and 12 weeks, just as the book promises. The content of the book is extremely well-presented and supported by the latest medical research on menopause and is full of helpful suggestions and coping strategies, from dealing with hot flashes, relationships, eating plans, emotional changes and beauty tips, and the author even has a website with downloads to help you calculate your BMI, caloric intake and much much more. There's a newsletter to help you keep in touch and motivated, and testimonials to help you stay focused. It couldn't be ANY easier to regain your sense of wellness and self esteem during this amazing transition and do it gracefully while feeling great about yourself! I can't recommend this book enough, it worked for me and it can certainly work for you!!

Nothing new here,

There's nothing new or surprising in "The Menopause Makeover." Also, the author's video on the Amazon page shows her to be a near-perfect Southern California blonde who looked fabulous at a weight she considered utterly horrifying, which made it hard for me to take all her diet and appearance angst seriously. That said, it's a well-written and attractively packaged guide, and the diet advice seems reasonable enough. If you need very basic information about menopause and general health, or if you're someone who will actually follow a twelve-week program based on a book, you may find it useful. If you're looking for new information or deep insight about menopause, look elsewhere.

Well written. My wife liked the way it was divided up, and that it was written with a physician (not just some lay-person's ideas not necessarily grounded in measurable fact). She found it helpful in multiple respects, including diet, exercise, recipes, questionnaires to individualize some of the recommendations, etc. She's read many books on the subject, and ranked this one in the very top tier of her menopause reading list over the years. She did the reading, let me do the writing, but the comments are hers - so take that from a post-menopausal female who knows a whole lot more about the subject than her husband the typist. {{grin}}(Oh - if it's so good, why not 5 stars? ONLY because we reserve 5 stars for the very, very top products/books. This one is well up there, and a very solid, recommended "4.")

I have received, purchased, and sought out a lot of advice over the past couple of years regarding this new phase of, if ever, offered by various authorities. I received this book as a gift and to tell you the truth was a bit skeptical. A rainy weekend and increasing hot flashes encouraged me to read the book. WOW! Finally, a true resource for honestly addressing a menopausal woman's needs and offering a clear plan of action. Thank you for sharing your action plan. I now am ready to celebrate this new me.

A friend of mine purchased this book and was so excited about it she passed it on to me. Much to my dismay, I am currently experiencing signs of menopause. My Mother has not been helpful in sharing her experiences and I feel very thankful that I have girlfriends to share this book with as I enter this phase of my life. Wow! Everyone needs to read this book to gain confidence and knowledge - it is very empowering at a time of great change and uncertainty. The writer approaches the facts with humor, warmth and wisdom. It makes you feel good. I am going to buy this book for all my gal pals and hope they will all work on a makeover together with me - like a girls club! What fun would that be....hum, thank you again to the author who took a chance to help us all.

Menopause made a little less mysterious!,

This review is from: The Menopause Makeover: The Ultimate Guide to Taking Control of Your Health and Beauty During Menopause (Paperback)
Menopause is the big secret that we women don't discuss. It is hardly dinner conversation! I was thrilled to find this book and have so many questions answered and mystery's solved (that don't need to be so frighteningly mysterious!) I am at the very beginning of menopause and feel that armed with this information from Ms. Jonekos I might be able to get a head start and avoid some of the pitfalls! This is a quick read and is filled with great tips and advice on everything from diet to hormone therapy. I would recommend it to any woman over 30 and have bought copies for my mother and mother in law who are both in their 70's-well past menopausal age but they are both starving for information on how to get their bodies back in their control! Bravo for writing this..and thank you!

The author of this "makeover" is a busy professional who had somehow reached the age of 50 in today's world without somehow realizing that women of that age must face "the change." She was planning her wedding, when she suddenly began to experience strange conditions with her body that she couldn't seem to explain, seemingly most specific: weight gain that prevented her from getting into her wedding gown.In an effort to look her best for her wedding day, and therefore highly motivated, she throws together a plan to lose weight to look her best. And now, she supposedly passes those "secrets" onto others. But, there are no "secrets." I find it difficult to believe that ANY woman of our day and time, with any intelligence or common sense, can't figure out that, around the age of 50, she is probably going to encounter some changes with her body. I entered perimenopause in my late 30s, and there was no mystery about it, and I certainly didn't go into a panic. I simply started to educate myself on the next chapter of my life and what I could do to improve my physical well-being. I think at issue here is that this author was highly motivated (wedding), and there are some women entering this stage of their lives that are not as motivated. Also, I would have liked to have seen a more natural, holistic approach to menopause. This is a natural occurance in a woman's life - not something to be "madeover" from or fearful of. It just seemed to me the author was more concerned about the Hollywood ideal of staying young, instead of being fit and healthy at all ages, and embracing who the person you are. |
