Book Description

November 15, 1994
The hormonal changes of menopause affect nearly every tissue in the femal body, causing symptoms that can range from PMS in a woman's thirties and forties to such life-threatening illnesses as heart disease and osteoporosis in later years. Menopause & Midlife Health explains these vast physiological changes, and tells women what they need to know in order to maintain good health through the prime of life.

Written by a pioneer researcher in the area of meopausal health and a science writer, this comprehensive, practical book provides answers to the all-important questions every woman has about menopause including:

What type of diet is best for long-term health?
What supplements may help prevent osteoporosis?
What can be done to prevent breast cancer and heart disease in later life?
What can help "manage" hot flashes?
Is it safe to take estrogen and other hormones at menopause?
What can be done to maintain a healthy sex life in the middle years and beyond?

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Notelovitz, who established the Climacteric Clinic at the University of Florida at Gainesville, collaborates here with freelance writer Tonnessen to explain the hormonal alterations not only of menopause itself but also those of the years that precede and follow it, with symptoms ranging from PMS to osteoporosis. Writing with clarity and paying close attention to the sorts of details that consumers will care about, the coauthors, who also cowrote Estrogen: Yes or No? , survey dietary considerations, make contraceptive recommendations for midlife users, discuss the option of hysterectomy and look at illnesses that can strike in or after middle age: heart disease, cancer, urinary tract infections and others. They also take a reasoned look at the pros and cons of hormone therapy, and offer counsel on sex. The asset of the book, besides its completeness, is accessibility: seemingly, the authors have left little out, and certainly they've brought complicated information down to earth.

From Library Journal

This is the first book on menopause written by a physician doing research in the field. It is an encyclopedia of general health for midlife women, explaining the hormonal changes that begin almost 15 years before any menopausal symptoms appear and offering detailed information about health maintenance. The book covers the basics of choosing and dealing with a physician and what a complete medical examination should include. It also provides a wealth of material on nutrition, exercise, weight control, contraception, heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis, diabetes, hysterectomy, and urinary tract disease. Tables, charts, and illustrations demonstrate medical procedures, anatomy, and exercises and compare calcium supplements and hormone replacement drugs. This resource for midlife women is more comprehensive than Sadja Greenwood's Menopause, Naturally ( LJ 10/15/84; Volcano Pr., 1992. rev. ed.) and Lonnie Barbach's The Pause ( LJ 4/15/83). Highly recommended for all collections.
