Outdated and Outclassed, July 28, 2010
This review is from: Menopause, Naturally: Preparing for the Second Half of Life (Paperback)
I read through this entire paperback book in bed one evening. Because it was that good? No, because I was determined to find something new or of real interest about this subject. The information is quite basic and like most of these meno books, rehashes all the same subjects in its attempt to capture every potential medical (and a basic overview of nonmedical) treatments. Same old same old here. Eat right, drink less, don't smoke, exercise...and onto the heavweight topic - the gold standard of EVERY meno book - are prescribed hormones actually good for you? There is not a drug company in the world with sufficient evidence to prove that artificial hormones are worth the risk. Natural hormones are limited mostly to rub on creams that are very hard to find a proper dosage as it varies so much from person to person. Still, they are infinitely preferable to synthetics, IMHO.
This book offers more in depth coverage of the diseases you can expect to contract once you are post menopausal. Nearly every meno book begins by telling you menopause is truly not a disease process but ends by telling you it results in a dozen or more of them. Basically, if you sum up the apparent medical world view of menopause: it is a rather simple, natural proces that results in complicated disesases that the medical world intends not to discover the cause of, but rather to stem the tide of with various drugs and hormones. Most of these books insist other cultures have it better in menopause, that is, unless you are an Eskimo meat eater and thus, prepare to die shortly after midlife from heart disease. On the other hand, you could find eternal youth if you happen to choose vegetarianism instead. This sort of outdated nonsense is outclassed by newer studies revealing that vegetarians are often MORE susceptible to heart disease because their cholesterol is TOO LOW. How many vegetarian joggers are peeled off Americas sidewalks every year after keeling over with heart attacks?
I'd love to read one book on menopause, ok, on health PERIOD that is well balanced. This one is just too old and outdated to be truly useful anymore and as if that were not sufficient cause to avoid it, the repeated references to lesbianism and lesbian sex are more than inappropriate. They are utterly without class. Your sexual choices are not important in the coverage of such material and appear, instead, as lifestyle endorsements.

Some dated information, July 29, 2010
This review is from: Menopause, Naturally: Preparing for the Second Half of Life (Paperback)
My doctor recommended this book for me and I was surprised when I discovered it's over 20 years old. There's quite a lot of outdated information however, there was enough good that I found the book helpful for my personal experiences. Besides that, what a deal at only $1 plus $3.99 shipping! Don't rely on it for current information on HRT though.
