I am a gym beginner who was looking for a solid introduction to weight training and fitness. My primary goals were learning a variety of exercises along with the proper form for each. 3.0 out of 5 stars Great for total beginner, I guess. Meh for anyone else
This book has a lot of useful, neatly-organized information in it. That having been said, most of it is what anyone with any fitness training experience would probably consider common sense. The dietary information in it is nice, making some good blanket recommendations, and the proposed "how much time how many days a week" workouts are very good ones. Again, however,...

5.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful, February 20, 2006
This review is from: Men's Health The Body You Want in the Time You Have: The Ultimate Guide to Getting Leaner and Building Muscle with Workouts that Fit Any Schedule (Paperback)
I am a gym beginner who was looking for a solid introduction to weight training and fitness. My primary goals were learning a variety of exercises along with the proper form for each. Let's face it - for a lot of us, lifting weights is boring stuff, but I figured that more options might keep me going back to the gym. And who wants to get hurt at the gym, or spend hours without any results?

As the book explained, though, the variety of exercises presented provides other benefits - as you continue to work out, changing your routine can not only alleviate boredom but help you pass a plateau. Of course I'm not at that point yet, but I imagine that the well-illustrated 48 "anytime exercises" the book presents will be very welcome when I do.

Another thing I was looking for was an actual routine. Other books I looked at felt like they'd leave me wandering around the gym confused, wondering which exercise to perform next. But this one gives you an order in which to perform the exercises (and I like that each exercise has a couple of variations, so if the station I need next is occupied, I can do the exercise on a bench or stability ball instead.)

The book breaks workouts into the number of days you can commit to working out, and within each day, the number of minutes you can dedicate to your workout (10, 20, 30, 45, and 60 minutes.) Each time period offers 4 distinct workouts - weight loss, definition, strength, and a combination of the three.

A couple of bonus features are a good chapter on stretching, and some brief but solid nutritional advice. I distrust a lot of the "super food" talk in some of these books, but at least this one doesn't shill supplements. Despite the cover and the publisher, it also avoids the "guys in a locker room" attitude of some other books, and has a few specific tips for women and a female model demonstrating some of the exercise variations. It also has a short section on how to put a home gym together.

The book is definitely geared more toward weight training, and while there are some cardio tips, many of the shorter "complete body" workouts exclude cardio work altogether (while the shorter "lean body" workouts offer only cardio work.) One other complaint - as I suggested, there's a pretty wide variety of exercises offered, but I would have liked more tips on substituting variations into the workouts presented. Each workout is very structured, but there are no tips to replace the given exercise with another unless you move on to one of the longer workouts.

Those complaints are minor, though, and if you're looking for a solid introduction to the gym or a way to maximize the time you spend there, I'd recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars No more excuses, February 7, 2006
This review is from: Men's Health The Body You Want in the Time You Have: The Ultimate Guide to Getting Leaner and Building Muscle with Workouts that Fit Any Schedule (Paperback)
I have been looking for a workout book that would allow me to do some lifting before work. I never seem to have the time, because my workout stretches to an hour. The way this book works is, you first determine how much time you have a week to workout, then you just turn to the section and look at those workouts. For example, I chose 30 minutes a time, 3 days a week. It really works well. You get a core set of workouts that target your whole body. I highly recommend this book for people who think they have "no time to lift".

4.0 out of 5 stars Body sculpting resource., April 1, 2006
This review is from: Men's Health The Body You Want in the Time You Have: The Ultimate Guide to Getting Leaner and Building Muscle with Workouts that Fit Any Schedule (Paperback)
A prospect came up to me and told me that they wanted to sculpt their bodies into shape.I knew he meant what he said, and it was up to me to come up with a thorough program. So I decided to look at different resources.I came across Mark Verstegen's "core workout" and Myatt Murphy's book.I bought both books, and I found Murphy's book to be more focused on body sculpting-not to mean that there is something wrong with Mark's book.
This book has wonderul workouts that you could utilize depending on the amount of time you have available, I found this to be a powerful resource, whenever I have a client with only 30 minutes to spare.
I am competent in designing and implementing workouts, but there are times when I feel that my clients need something different, and thats where the "48 anytime exercises" come in.
This book will definitely get you that gladiator look.

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't agree more, February 22, 2006
This review is from: Men's Health The Body You Want in the Time You Have: The Ultimate Guide to Getting Leaner and Building Muscle with Workouts that Fit Any Schedule (Paperback)
What a cool book! All the books I've ever bought about exercise always assume that you have 3 days to work out and that's it. Well, that's not me and this book accomodates anyone, whether you got one day to give yoursefl that week or seven days. Very nice. I used it last week when I had 5 days to work out and it made it so easy to switch workouts to match my schedule. This week, I'll probably only have two days and sure enough, it let me change my wotkouts once again, yet the results never change. This thing is addicting if you like--or hate--to exercise.

5.0 out of 5 stars The last exercise book you'll ever need!, February 16, 2006

With three kids and a job that requires me to be out of town a few days a month, I have no time to join a gym. I picked up this book because the title intriged me and I hoped to find a few workout tips I could add to my routine. But the book ended up being so much more! It's really a workout manual you can use anytime based on when you think you can work out! Now instead of adding a few pointers and getting rid of the book, I take it with me on all my business trips and use it to plan a workout based on my schedule. I've never found a book that so easily works around YOU, as opposed to telling you what to do and how often to do it! If you really want to lose weight and get in shape, this is the only book you'll ever need!

This book is well organized and offers an incredible amount of varied exercise routines and options that will fit into anyone's busy day.

Exercise equipment:
- Offers exercise equipment choices for home gym, commercial gym and people who have nothing to use.

Exercise routines timeframes and schedules:
- This book is chockfull of exercise programs from; 10 minute, 1 day per week workouts to 60 minute, 6 days per week workouts.

Goals:
- Offers well-timed programs for specific goals, i.e. lean body plan, instant muscle plan, power plan and complete body plan.

What this book is not:
- This book is not for those who want to focus primarily on hardcore body building.
- This book is not for people who are looking for periodization training for a specific sport.

To summarize, this book is packed with a multitude of well illustrated exercise programs. These programs offer good variations in both skill and intensity. The routines in this book mostly utilize compound exercises (squats, deadlfts, lunges and bench pressing), these exercises work multiple muscle groups, making for very efficient workouts.

This book is perfect for people who want to simply focus on getting stronger in the amount of time that they have to do so. The goal of the author is to get people moving and he achieves that with great success.

I have about 18 years of lifting under my belt and I would say this is a great book gives you everything you need to workout in the time that you have, and it has the principles built in so you dont have to know how many sets and reps for certain results. You want to getting leaner it tells you, want to bulk a little it tells you that I think its very practical and clear. Highly reccomend this book. Many books give you wacky principles and try to sell you I think this book is right on the money.

For years now, I've been looking for that book to help me lose those unwanted pounds off my body. Although other books have slightly helped, no book has done the job that Murphy's book has. Within a few weeks of going through the exercises and routines that he discussed, I was able to shed nearly 10 pounds and go down a whole pant size! His book and the title truly go hand in hand... "The Body You Want In The Time You Have!". Having a full-time job while attending college to get my bacehlor's degree, the time I have is quite limited...but this book helps you figure out ways to work any routine into your schedule. Truly a masterpiece and highly recommended to anyone out there to pick up and buy!

I found this book by accident when ordering G-Force and cliked on the co-author. Then when I got it, I was surprised at how neat it was. There's 120 different workouts that you can use and then change... but they are all simple to use. i even ended up xeroxing some of the routines because of how they are laid out. All these mini pics make it easy to bring to the gym.

The title had me hooked. As the author claims, he has a workout for anyones time schedule and appearance goals, no more excuses. I would like the author to write 2 more books to complete the package. The first one to help me vary my routines for the same time frame and appearance goal, because as he states, "we need to alter our routines." The second book would go into the nutritional aspect in greater detail. He, like many authors thinks the typical american, who has little time or desire to cook and eat foods we've rarely heard of or seen, will change too easily. You have to make the food changes slow and easy.
