5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent sculptural approach to drawing, November 28, 2009
By

This review is from: Menschen zeichnen (Hardcover)
Gottfried Bammes was a German draftsman and drawing teacher -- widely known in Europe (where his big drawing book is referred to among art students simply as "the Bible"), yet not very well known to the American public. The English translations we have of his books are in fact a MUCH abridged version of his main books and consists mostly of drawing done by his students. This book, lavishly illustrated, features analytical drawings done in a sculptural by the master himself. He breaks form in an absurdly simple and clear way so as to make the complex anatomy of the human figure easier both to understand and to memorize. Written years after his big book (Die Gestalt des Menschen), this is his attempt to offer the same kind of sculptural thinking to drawing as in his previous book; this time, however, with more drawings than text. Featuring over 300 pages in very high quality paper, it is also a "big" book in its own right",and in my opinion the drawings here are in many cases clearer than in his other book (which I also own).

The text is in German, but the drawings speak for themselves. There are sections dedicated to proportions, weight and balance, plus -- the bulk of the book -- anatomy and the construction of the human figure. A must buy for anyone who wants to draw the human figure with greater knowledge both from life and from memory.
