From the Author

Dieting is one of the difficulties of life. Because in fact only you truly know your strengths and weaknesses. What are your needs, versus what you want. It is these and many more challenges that may dieting a solute struggle.

From the Back Cover

Dieting, weight loss, weight control, weight reduction, weight management... call it what you will, it's a topic that touches every one of us. These days it seems everyone wants to lose a little weight or a lot. If you've ever felt guilty for having that extra helping at dinner or for grabbing a candy bar as a snack, if your doctor has told you to lose weight for better health, or if you've wanted to drop a clothing size or tried to firm up in time for the summer, you're certainly not alone.

Earl Spence has been there himself. Having successfully lost over 100 pounds, he now shares his own hard-earned insights in his first book, The Mental Challenge of Dieting.

With candid attention to the complex workings of the mind when it comes to food habits, Spence reveals the importance of learning about your body and how it functions, of recognizing why you eat, and of understanding the role stress may play in the problem.

From the "battle of senses" one faces when dieting to the Shark Effect and to his own tried-and-true method of DCDs (Designed Cheat Days), Spence offers straightforward overviews of the familiar yet hidden struggles we face. And his approaches to handling holidays, dining out, and attending parties unveil just a few of the simple, practical solutions Spence shares throughout his book for breaking unhealthy routines, altering behavior patterns, and even tricking the mind.

Spence knows the importance of exercise, the value of compliments, the significance of milestones, and the adjustment one must take after the diet ends. Allow him to share his wisdom with you as you confront The Mental Challenge of Dieting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful, July 24, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Mental Challenge of Dieting (Paperback)
It was easy reading and helpful. It has given me the added incentive to strive towards my goal to lose weight and feel good about myself. Knowing that someone has achieved their goal and has gone through the same feelings I have is comforting. Since reading this book I do not feel guilty when I cheat. I know that nobody is perfect and that there will be days when you will cheat on your diet. I have a lot more confidence in my ability to continue until I reach my goal weight.

Now I definitely know what to do. This book helped to get rid of illusions completely. My mind is clear and set for a goal to lose only 20 pounds which were the most difficult for me since I gained them. Now I am confident that I can do that.
