3.0 out of 5 stars NOT ONE OF MR. CHRISTIANSEN'S BEST
Having read about a half dozen of the author's usually fine & practical books,I have to say there's far too much "New Age" & "Ying Yang" nonsense for my liking in this one. In fairness,it does improve after the first chapter or two,but compared to either of his FIGHTER'S FACT BOOK(s),it leaves a feeling of disappointment.

This incredible little book contains the mental techniques that the author, a renown martial arts instructor, has found to be extremely effective in his teaching, writing, personal training, and in real-life application during his 29 years in law enforcement. "I have used these techniques for many years now," he says, "and I'm still impressed and sometimes amazed at how well they work."

Christensen takes you through the process of developing your own mental edge detailing techniques of relaxation, self-hypnosis, and mental imagery to help you develop discipline, defeat fear, and bring out the very best that you are capable of.

The techniques in this book are easy to learn, easy to use, and when coupled with mental preparedness (also taught in the book), you will be equipped with skills to face most anything that happens out in the mean streets. Whether it's an opponent in karate or judo competition, or a self defense situation against an attack on the street when you least expect it, this book will help you be ready.

While THE MENTAL EDGE was written from the perspective of a martial artist for martial artists, it's applications can be used by anyone seeking to develop a powerful mental edge.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Holy Grail of Mental Martial Arts Training ... for me at least, April 14, 2007
This review is from: The Mental Edge, Revised (Paperback)
After finishing this fantastic book I wrote Loren Christensen to thank him for writing this. I can't believe I waited so long to get this book. But, who knows if I would have been in the right state of mind years back to really understand and use what I learned.

In my e-mail to Mr. Christensen I told him that this was really one of the most therapeutic books I've ever read. As I read the chapter about fear my past issues about fighting came to the surface. Things became clear. And so help me I felt taller after. I felt like a weight was lifted. The questions he recommends you ask yourself really helped.

I read this book w/ a totally open mind ready to apply everything I could. Amazon kept me waiting for over a month so I throw my self into this book out of excitement to finally have it.

There was a book I read before this one called "What makes tough guys tough". I thought it would answer my questions about being tough and fear. Really it didn't. In fact it left me wanting or should I say needing more. The book {Tough guys book} left you feeling like there maybe no way of getting the aggression you may need in a fight if you didn't have it at Birth. BUT! This book actually has a exercise to release that inner fury. Thank you Mr. Christensen.

This is going to be one of my all time top 10. Don't let the size of the book throw you. In truth I think authors that can write amazing work in under 200 pages and a rare breed -- and some of the best.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book packed with easy-to-use techniques, March 21, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Mental Edge, Revised (Paperback)
In this easy-to-read book, the author pulls no punches. In plain English, he explains how to use relaxation, suggestion, and imagery to improve your martial arts training (and your life).

There are lots of books out there describing how to incorporate hypnosis into your training routine. Many are more technically written. Loren tells you what you need to know and decribes how to do it without the jargon!

As a licensed counselor and hypnotherapist, I use the same type of techniques described in this book both with my clients and in my own martial arts training. They are very effective!

5.0 out of 5 stars Discipline, May 15, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Mental Edge, Revised (Paperback)
If you want to be a martial artist for life, then I highly recommend this book. Here is one quote --among many-- from this book that made an impact on me.

"You are only given so much time on Earth and if you have chosen to make the martial arts part of your life, and you are working toward a specific goal, then allotting time to train is part of the deal. But if you replace that time with, say, TV watching, or going to a party, you have weakened your discipline and cheated your goal, your art, and yourself." P. 89

I can only say that the effort was obvious but the information was hard to use.The research was solid but lacked common usage for slugs like me.
