As a clinical social worker and marriage and family therapist, I found this book to be an essential part of my learning experience. It is important that everyone involved in the mental health system understand the history of this system - - where we were and how we got to here.

This book covers issues such as the nature of mental health and mental illness, the flow of patients into treatment, the development of mental health policy in the United States, HMO's, the Community Mental Health Act, and how policies impact those really in need of care.

I highly recommend this book for all students and professionals who seek to understand the system of mental health in our country. It is written in an interesting way and is a wealth of information.

This text allows a student to learn and grasp further knowledge about the various policies that go with mental health. I am able to see how social policy overlaps with political policy. It is dry reading but great knowledge base in the long run.
