This review is from: The Mental Health Worker: Psychiatric Aide (Paperback)
As a Veterans Employment Career Counselor, and holder of a MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, I have several clients who are seeking jobs as Mental Health Technicians (MHT). In our area we have an excellent local training center that provides training and certification for MHT using this as their text book.
Unfortunately, this is the only book of its kind. The book is well organized however, the author needs to update the book with current research. Originally written in 1996, the authors glumped Frued's Psychosexual Stages with Erikson's Psychosocial Stages. For the most part the author is on track. However, it would better if the author would compare them side by side. The chapters on anxiety, chemical dependency, common psychiatric disorders, developmental disorders in children and adults, and mental retardation should be updated in accordance with the DSM-IV-TR. I fully understand that MHTs are not diagnosing, or treating these patients, but need a current, updated textbook to better serve their patients. |
