Mental Processes in the Human Brain, edited by Jon Driver, Patrick Haggard and Tim Shallice, Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, 2007, and Oxford University Press, 2008, 308 ff.

Following the Introduction to the Proceedings by the editors, all of whom are Professors at the UCL Institute of Cognitive Neurosciences at University College, London, this volume is a compilation of contributions from eminent researchers in Britain, continental Europe, America and Canada.

This is book for researchers in neuroscience or cognitive sciences. The articles are far more detailed than any general reader would require; indeed, any such reader would find the material challenging in its technical, particularly medical, detail. The contributors cover such topics as neural models, behaviour regulation, language faculties, memory, neurochemistry and decision making.

This is an excellent and still up-to-date account of research fronts in many areas of brain neurophysiology and the relation with processes of the mind. As usual in such research volumes there are copious references accompanying each article. There are colour and black-and-white illustrations in the book and, somewhat unusually, a good Index to the volume as a whole. This is an academic research volume for physiologists, especially neurophysiologists, and psychologists. It might also be of some interest to philosophers who have the necessary medical background.
