Mentor Touched My Heart,
By
This review is from: Mentor: The Kid & The CEO; A Simple Story of Overcoming Challenges and Achieving Significance (Hardcover)
Mentor, the Kid and the CEO touched me. I read constantly, but it has been a long time since a book moved me like this one. The story is about how a young man with no direction in his life changes due in part to the influence of a mentor.
The book is a fast read, but not simplistic. The storytelling by Walter Jenkins is excellent. I had to find out what happened next! Mentor has some excellent take-away features, such as a reading list and a to-do list of sorts for changing your life. There are more free mentoring helps on the website associated with the book. I believe that corporations and churches should buy quantities of these and set up mentoring programs.

Mentor is a novel of overcoming challenges,

PaceButler Corporation CEO Tom Pace, with assistance from speaker and former attorney Walter Jenkins, present Mentor: The Kid & The CEO, an uncomplicated story about a most unlikely friendship. The kid has had one too many run-ins with the law and is facing sentencing as a felon; but the CEO sees potential. A three-year friendship helps to turn the kid around, despite setbacks for both the student and the teacher. Mentor is a novel of overcoming challenges, and the strength of a bond formed through shared difficulties in the journey toward a successful life. Highly recommended.

Action makes the world go round,

Great work Tom. Easy read with a good message. Action defines success as you say in your book. Direction defines significance. I would recommend it for anybody looking to leave a legacy behind when you are gone.

Relevant, But Sappy,

This review is from: Mentor: The Kid & The CEO; A Simple Story of Overcoming Challenges and Achieving Significance (Paperback)
I enjoyed the quick and easy read of this book. "The List" of helpful phrases and recommended reading list were excellent and useful. The story itself was too sappy and not believable. I noticed afterward that it was based on actual events and would have found those details to be better than the fairy tale. Overall, the message was positive and relevant for anyone on either side of a mentoring relationship.

Mentor: The Kid & The CEO
This truly is a book of encouragement, it will help thoses that doubt, and have low self-esteem. My brother received this book from the actual author, and he passed it onto my older sister, then my sister passed onto me! It was such a powerful book to read, that I could not even put it down! I have finish reading this book, and pass in on for my 18 year old son to read. This truly is must have book for mentoring.

This book was a quick read. I wouldn't say that it is an excellent book but it was interesting. It can be too religious for a non-religious person however.

Does the World Really Need Another Self-Help Book?,

This review is from: Mentor: The Kid & The CEO; A Simple Story of Overcoming Challenges and Achieving Significance (Paperback)
As it turns out, yes!
To begin with, as self-help novels go, this one is remarkably well written. Even cynical old me found myself being drawn into the story; as the plot progressed, I actually wanted to know how it would come out and what would happen to the characters! The credit for this arguably goes more to Walter Jenkins, the ghostwriter, than it does to Tom Pace, the man who conceived the idea. (Mr. Jenkins is an interesting character in his own right, a man who regards completing your book for you not as a job but rather as a "calling".) As for Mr. Pace, this book and one of the characters is based in part on actual events in his life, though chances are, not the character you'll think it is. One of Mr. Pace's true passions is the importance of reading and in addition to the books directly referred to and read by characters in the story: The Greatest Miracle in the World, The E-Myth Revisited: Why Most Small Businesses Don't Work and What to Do About It, How to Win Friends & Influence People, Think and Grow Rich, and The Purpose Driven Life: What on Earth Am I Here For?, he includes a suggested reading list in Appendix D, by no means composed entirely of self-help books. Judged strictly on the merits, this book has a lot of good advice on how to succeed in business as well as in life, which you'd expect from a self-help book, but it contains something more that makes it stand out from the crowd. The trouble with self-help books is that they tend to work only for the self-motivated. The easily discouraged, the hopelessly pessimistic, and the terminally lazy tend not to get much out of them because not even the best of them can keep you from giving up and quitting. That's where Mr. Pace's stressing of the importance of mentoring and being mentored comes in because unlike a book, a good mentor won't let you just give up and quit, at least not without an argument. What it adds up to is that Mr. Pace has written this book for more than just the poorly taught about succeeding who will benefit from its guidance; it is also written for those who already know how to succeed but are not yet sharing their knowledge with others. To put it another way, hey, you, Mr. or Ms. successful businessman or businesswoman! It is time to quit complaining about the ignorance of what it takes to succeed prevalent among young people today and time to start doing something about it! If you don't believe that YOU need a mentor (and Mr. Pace would argue that you might be mistaken about that), then it is time to BE a mentor! Start with your own children if you have any, but don't stop there! Think of it this way, any young people you manage to reach as a mentor will probably have better things to do should anti-capitalists decide to load people on buses to go throw rocks at your nice big house someday. Think of the money you could save on security guards alone! Note: For reaching truly young children, an alternative to combing through out of print books at antique stores looking for juvenile fiction that doesn't treat success in business as something evil, might be giving them Jennifer Bouani's Future Business Leaders' Series Tyler & His Solve-a-Matic Machine and Tyler Passes the Golden Key.

Inspirational!,
This review is from: Mentor: The Kid & The CEO (Kindle Edition)
This is one of the most inspirational books I've read in a long time. To be able to touch a life the way this book does is something special...something from within. I have passed this book along to many - most recently to a young man in jail. I hope he sees the possibilities in his life. You made a mistake - now you have a chance to make it better. Learn from your mistakes! Move on and help someone else! A must read!

All your wildest dreams are possible!,

This review is from: Mentor: The Kid & The CEO; A Simple Story of Overcoming Challenges and Achieving Significance (Hardcover)
I first read this book when I was going through a rough time in my life and had no purpose in life. I started the book and could not put it down until I was completely done with the book. As soon as I finished I created a dream list and wanted to get a mentor. I took action in my life which was a new thing for me and good things finally started to happen to me. All I needed was a little motivation which is what this book did for me. Today I read all the time, I run 5 days a week, I have a mentor and mentor others, have a great job, and know that anything is possible with hope and action!

This review is from: Mentor: The Kid & The CEO; A Simple Story of Overcoming Challenges and Achieving Significance (Hardcover)
My 17 year old son read it and immediately scrubbed his bathroom, cleaned out his closet and is now finishing up his room. He asked me if I was available Wednesday so we could clean out my office. Hmmm...who is this child and what have they done with my son?!
I highly recommend Mentor: The Kid & The CEO not only to adolescents but to adults as well. The book inspired me to start running again and become more conscious of my food intake. Great book! |
