3.0 out of 5 stars Burned out fast on this program. Careful...
I tried the Mentzer sytem for 8 weeks. Initially I made impressive gains, especially in strength. And it was great to get in and out of the gym quickly. But alas, I was burned out at the end of the 8 weeks and lost the lines that I had worked for. I would recommend this system only as break from regular training, not as a substitute. And you can't bring out the striations...

This review is from: Mike Mentzer's High Intensity Training Program (All natural muscular development) (Paperback)
I sought more information on High Intensity training after reading a debate of volume training vs. High Intensity by Mike Mentzer and Dr. Stone in All Natural Muscular Development Magazine. Prior to reading the article I had not heard of High Intensity training. After reading the article I realized that I had no basic principles upon which I was building my training program. I would read an article in Flex and follow that, then another in MM2K and follow that; some routines produced results and some did not. I purchased the tape series and listened several times to each tape. I was apprehensive about trying the program because I too suffered from the notion that if I was not training 4 days a week for two hours I would lose my hard earned gains. Finally, I decided to follow the program and follow it exactly. I decided that even if the training program was wrong, I was better off having a rational basis for what I was doing and why I was doing it, then continuing to follow the next magazine article. The program presented also made a lot of sense. The results were nothing short of spectacular. For a 41 year old gu y I am very impressed. The information presented on the tapes is clear and easy to follow. I highly recommend this tape series to anyone who is serious about building a better body. Like me, it may also help you the think more critically about many other aspects of your life. Thanks Mike

4.0 out of 5 stars Needed: less philosophy, more fitness. Otherwise, GREAT!, April 7, 1999
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Mike Mentzer's High Intensity Training Program (All natural muscular development) (Paperback)
Mentzer's approach to strength building is exactly what we need - a true plan that really works! I've used this protocal now for almost 3 months and the results are fantastic. I am 52 and I have become more muscular now than ever in my life. What a relief to find out that you don't have to be a gym rat to achieve a physique that gets second looks.

A disappointment is the proportion of the tapes spent on philosophy. Only about half of the set concerns exercises and diet. I would have liked much more description of the exercises and why these particular routines were chosen. We are asked to have faith that they are the best. Incidently, having faith in what we are told is exactly what we are asked not to do in the philosophical Tape 1. I would describe the exercises in the sequencing chosen, however, as elegent. Only one suggestion from my experience - combine superslow cadence with High Intensity.

If you would like to build muscle, you won't find a more rational or efficient technique.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mentzer's HIT program is easier on your joints., January 2, 2000
This review is from: Mike Mentzer's High Intensity Training Program (All natural muscular development) (Paperback)
I have read many of the reviews about the HIT training program and tried it myself. I think that many of the people who are critical of the program are forgetting that this program will have you working out infrequently with plenty of rest. If you were to train like this 3-5 times per week then without a doubt you would overtrain and possibly damage the joints. This is a great program and I highly recommend it to anyone who would like to make consistent gains. Mentzer's program gets tremendous results. Period!

5.0 out of 5 stars safe, efficient, and effective, August 8, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Mike Mentzer's High Intensity Training Program (All natural muscular development) (Paperback)
I worked as a personal trainer for 5 years, during which time I applied the principles Mike espouses with all of my clients, producing spectacular results. The program is COMPLETELY SAFE as long as controlled movement speeds are used. In five years, and having worked with elderly clients and back and neck patients, I have not witnessed a single injury resulting from the use of this protocol. If someone is hurt doing this, they are either moving too fast, using poor form, or violating some other safety consideration.

If you're interested in maximizing your muscular potential, faster, safer, and with less wasted time, then I recommend checking out all of Mike's works.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally someone got it right, January 12, 2003

This review is from: Mike Mentzer's High Intensity Training Program (All natural muscular development) (Paperback)
Mr. Mentzer finally addresses why the average person fails to make progress like the pros. For those who failed in trying his routines and implementing his rest suggestions, i can only say you did not work out hard enough. As a doctor with a background in exercise physiology, i recommend this book %100 to those who want to build muscle mass. However, if you are not willing to go "all out" on your working sets, you will not gain on this or any other program. Intensity is the key to mass building, not duration. To those who dont believe his methods are scientific, do you know what science really is? Just because Mr. Mentzer did not wear a lab coat and have a PhD. does not mean he was not practicing good science. Bravo Mr. Mentzer

5.0 out of 5 stars Rational, Productive and Efficient!, February 9, 1999
This review is from: Mike Mentzer's High Intensity Training Program (All natural muscular development) (Paperback)
I thought Mike's audio tapes were a real treat. They contain hours of straightforward, logical thinking (which is rare in this field) that is great in both theory and in practice. I am almost 40 years old and have been using the detailed training routine from these tapes and have made the best strength & size gains in my life - while spending the least amount of time ever in the gym! I work out only once a week for 20-30 minutes. Each bodypart gets worked to a 1 set failure once every 28 days (except legs & calves which get worked to a 1 set failure every 14 days)!!!

These tapes are great for the drug-free bodybuilder but not so great for gym owners. Don't be surprised when the owner of your gym gets mad at you for lowering your "annual" or "monthly" membership to a "daily" - 4 "daily's" a month are all you need on this program!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mike is THE Man, April 17, 2000

Darrell Fortae (Chatham, Il United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mike Mentzer's High Intensity Training Program (All natural muscular development) (Paperback)
I tried every type of "fad" in working out over the years and got SQUAT for results. I burned myself out so badly that I would try anything. I took a chance on the "high intensity low volume" approach and boy am I glad I did! I can't believe I was so blind like so many other rock heads out there that listen to the jargan that the "professionals" tell them. This is THE best book on the market for achieving amazing strength, speed, and muscularity. The only thing I can say is it takes a semi-intelligent person to see the truth and logic in Mike Mentzer's theory. BUY THIS BOOK if you are like how I used to be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kick *** program I say., October 27, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Mike Mentzer's High Intensity Training Program (All natural muscular development) (Paperback)
I have used High Intensity training now for one year and all I can say is wow. I went from 6 to 12 plates per side on the leg press, 2 to 5 plates for squats and I have gone from 195 lbs frame of muscle to 225 lbs of lean mass. Someone should tell the dude who wrote on June 6 of this year to get a life because if he has to spend every day at the gym, he must have a no life what so ever. I now train once every 10 days so that means I have time to do other things like make money as a personal trainer. Thanks Mike for showing me the true science to bodybuilding.

5.0 out of 5 stars Me and my results, August 6, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Mike Mentzer's High Intensity Training Program (All natural muscular development) (Paperback)
After the High Intesity program using the principals espoused by Mentzer, Darden, and others, all I have to say is that if it doesn't work, your not doing it right.People thought I was a juicer after this program and I have never taken steroids in my life. I gained 10 lbs. in only a few months, and kept my bodyfat low. It works, for real, it works.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply, Awesome!!!, June 20, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Mike Mentzer's High Intensity Training Program (All natural muscular development) (Paperback)
As a serious bodybuilder the last 3 years I had started to have a problem with overtraining which affected my gains as well as my motivation. 2 months ago I started the HIT program and have made gains beyond belief. When I first heard of the program I was very skeptical, however everytime it was time to work out I was getting stronger and was able to see changes in my body. Now I look forward to my workouts and said Bye to all those days where I had to force myself to go to the gym and as far as overtraining it is a thing of the past. If you are at the end of the rope as I was I highly recommend High Intensity Training, you won't believe the results!!
