Great reference. I'm not from town and found it invaluable during my time in New Haven. Hoping this duo will put some more together soon.

Finally a guide to do New Haven justice,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Menu: New Haven (Paperback)
Murumba and Goldstein finally took advantage of all the city has to offer for true epicurians and students alike and wrote an honest, comprehensive culinary guide. Their reviews are more than just praise and their system of evaluation guarantees a great overall perspective of a restaurant, but is also detailed enough to highlight the best and worst each place has to offer. Excellent guide to restaurants; I go nowhere without it and strongly reccomend it for anyone interested in the Elm City.

much needed,

i can't believe new haven was without a good guide for so long and i don't know how i survived my first few years there. this also makes for very engaging reading, so if you pick it up just to choose a restaurant, be sure not to book too early, you might find yourself an hour later still on the couch reading dead-on entertaining and engaging reviews. absolutely a must if you live in the area. the authors also do a great job of putting on the map places one would not normally think of when deciding where to dine. they do a great service to new haven.

spot on,

my goodness! this is by far the best restaurant guide i've ever used. every review was spot on, and i was very impressed with the authors' frankness. it's refreshing to have a restaurant guide that doesn't read like a list of paid advertisements from the restaurants. this is truly the first guide i've read with such honest, well-researched, and even hilarious advice, and the authors really know their stuff when it comes to food. it's too bad they only seem to have a few cities so far. i'd love to see one of these in every city in the country--in the world, even!

New Haven residents need this,
By Aron Fischer (New Haven, CT United States) - See all my reviews

How many hours and dollars do you spend eating out? Lots, probably. But, especially when you're new to an area, you don't really know where to go--and thus end up spending a lot of time and money that could have been better spent elsewhere. For this reason, any restaurant guide is valuable. The Menu is a very good restaurant guide. Since I bought it last spring, I have used it dozens of times and have almost always been happy with the results. My only criticism would be the authors' taste for greasy spoon food and distaste for vegetarian, which at times borders on the perverse (come on, Educated Burgher is *not* better than Gourmet Heaven.) But even there, they know how to discern the good from the bad--Gourmet Heaven is better than Claire's, and the Yankee Doodle is better than the Educated Burgher. The strength of the book is its range--from the best pizza to the best diner to the best ethnic to the best upscale, the authors are authoritative. There's no book I bought since I moved to New Haven that has been more valuable to me.

useful and fun,
By A Customer

This book is an invaluable resource for anyone who will be spending time in New Haven -- it lists tons of restaurants, if not every single one in the city. Not just good restaurants, but bad ones; expensive ones and cheap ones. And the authors definitely tell you what they think, absolutely trashing some restaurants, and always referring to specific dishes to let you know what was right or wrong about them. What's more, it's a really fun book to read. There are places I would never eat at, but it's fun reading about them anyway since this book is well-written and funny. I definitely recommend it.

Indispensible for the adventurous,

A favorite pasttime of mine is trying new restaurants, and "The Menu: New Haven" has proved my best friend on every culinary adventure. No other publication in existence matches the thoroughness of its reviews and the comprehensiveness of its selection. Just a quick search through the categorized lists in the back will help you discover hidden treasures just blocks away from where you live that you would never have found otherwise. I especially recommend this for students stuck in the Yale bubble--if there's any reason to get out and find out what a great city New Haven is, it's to eat.
