Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

With their thick applications of tertiary colors, oscillating backgrounds and heavy, ragged black outlines reminiscent of linoleum-block printing, Arnold's illustrations are nothing if not compelling; they also reflect a goodnatured and jazzy comic verve. The story, like the artist's previous Duck, Duck, Goose?, is based on a popular Russian children's book by Vladimir Grigorievich Suteev (considered Russia's answer to Walt Disney, according to an author's note). A floppy young spaniel, awakened from his nap by a meow, goes in search of the noisemaker. In a series of misadventures, the always undaunted Puppy discovers that different animals?a rooster, a bee, a frog and others?make different sounds. The cat, who has been spying on Puppy the whole time (children should have fun spotting her mischievous face), finally makes a grand, meowing entrance through a window; flanked by flapping fuchsia curtains, she's a vision of feline fury, with acid-green eyes and tangerine fur. Hisses and barks are traded across a bravura, full-bleed spread that packs enough visual wattage to light up a small city. The typeface, playful and colorful wherever a sound is concerned, goes for broke in this scene as well. The book ends with a nice tease: the now-satisfied Puppy settles back into his nap, only to hear another new sound: "Mooo!" Ages 6 mos.-4 yrs.

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-KAArnold once again champions the work of Russian storyteller Vladimir Grigorievich Suteev with another competent retelling of one of his tales. An author's note describes Suteev as the "Russian Walt Disney"; his first animated tale was created in 1931. This story was wildly popular when it first appeared in a movie in 1955. A curious puppy is awakened from his nap by an unfamiliar "Meow." He sets off to discover the source of the sound and along the way he has some mishaps with a number of other creatures, including a rooster, bee, frog, and fish, before learning who said, "Meow." After chasing off said cat, the puppy falls back asleep until he hears "Mooo." This picture book is a natural for preschool storyhours. The illustrations are reminiscent of Arnold's early work with sharply defined outlines and lots of color. However, the somewhat stylistic illustrations are more sophisticated than Ellen Weiss's softer, simpler pictures in Maria Palushkin's Who Said Meow? (Bradbury, 1988). If you have that version, pass on this one.AChristy Norris Blanchette, Valley Cottage Library, NY

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT FUN, March 23, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Meow! (Hardcover)
I first read this book to my two and a half year old son in the library. We both laughed so hard I was looking for the "shushing" librarian. I had fun because my son had fun. We both had SOOO much fun I had to go out and buy it so we can do it again whenever we want. I say do it again, because it is like a game you want to play over and over.

This review is from: Meow! (Hardcover)
This book by Kayta Arnold is a book which lends itself to discussions on animals relationships to other animals. Will the puppy discover which animal says meow? Children will enjoy the animal sounds and the bright illustrations.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun story for preschoolers, November 27, 2010
This review is from: Meow! (Hardcover)
I teach preschoolers and this book always gets a good response. It has a repetitive story that's easy for even toddlers to understand - the dog is looking for "who said Meow?" There are many animals for children to join in on animal sounds. The pictures are very bright and wild, and observant children can find where the cat is hiding on each page.
