This is a great CD. He wrote like a poet, which he was, and sang like an angel. "La Mer" and "Douce France" are anthems. If you have trouble understanding the French words, do a web search for: "paroles des chansons" and you can get the lyrics.

I couldn't get that lovely song from Steve Martin's movie LA STORIES out of my head. Discovered it was "La Mer" by Charles Trenet, and had to have it. This is a wonderful collection of pre-WWII songs that capture a certain era in Paris. Picture boozy American writers, avante-garde artistes, and other lost souls having a wonderful last romp in Paris caberets in the thirties. En fin, this is romantic music and goes well with brie and chardonnay.

Inspirational Music,

As a writer and a life guard I found something compelling in 'La Mer.' The words have a haunting appeal to me as I love the sea, love to swim; I can listen to the music while I write and enjoy the way it inspires me. I've listened to other version of this music but always get drawn back to the original by Charles Trenet. The words, the sentiments and the music are just perfect. I even wrote a short story to salute La Mer.

I recently saw the film Mr. Bean's Holiday with Rowan Atkinson. In the film there are several brief musical references to Charles Trenet's version of La Mer (The Sea). The movie concludes with Mr. Bean and everyone on the beach at Cannes singing La Mer at the top of their lungs... It is such a great song. The CD contains La Mer and many other tunes recorded by Trenet from 1938 to 1946.

I'm sure it's a great CD of songs by Charles Trénet ... but the singer on the album cover (as shown today 20081209) is Claude François (another good French singer) :)

This is a fun recording. Since they are the original recordings, they are not without flaws but the CD is decent for casual listening. This is not for the audiofile, but I have been happy with it.

If you can get your hands on a copy, this album is worth having. To my knowledge, there are three Charles Trenet albums bearing the title "La mer" with different song selections. This is the one I most love because it shows Charles Trenet is not just one smooth chantor, but a comic who giddily imitates barnyard animals. The bouncy hilarity of "La Poule Zazou" and "Chascun Son Reve" make this my pick for premiere "La Mer" album. Also, if you have young children, you will find that this is highly appealing music to them. To my mind, it bears endless repetition much better than one of those utterly charming collections of nursery rhymes sung by shrill-voiced ankle-biters which are hawked on daytime TV. And the cover art of a grinning, wide-eyed Trenet histrionically pointing to the great wide ocean is real winner.

La Mer,

I bought it because the music, La Mer, by Charles Trenet, was the background of the movie, Mr Bean on Holiday. The particular song brought back memories, but the remainder of the disc was less inspiring

Love La Mer so bought this CD. La Mer far and away only track I will listen to again! The others seem like jolly holiday songs to make you giggle, of course if my french were better they may be so much more. If you love La Mer but don't speak french buy a compilation CD
