Book Description

October 31, 2004
Japanese artist and automotive designer Louis Sugahara has created more than one hundred meticulous drawings of Mercedes-Benz Grand Prix race cars for fans of the invincible Silver Arrows. Through detailed captions as well as a lively narrative illustrated by rare historical photographs, he traces the evolution of the race cars from the W25 to the W196, explaining how exterior design evolved in response to performance requirements and driver preferences. Supplemented by an appendix containing circuit layouts, detailed race results, and model specifications, this handsome volume -- an updated version of the original 1997 Japanese edition -- captures the engineering genius behind the Three-Pointed Star.

This review is from: Mercedes-Benz Grand Prix Race Cars 1934 - 1955 (Hardcover)

If you want a study of the exterior modifications/evolution of the various racing Silver Arrows, this book is what you want. Excellent line drawings depict nearly every variation, and the text details them all. The text also covers the mechanical developments that went on under the skin of these racers, although not in as much detail as you will find elsewhere.
The only drawback I would note is that besides the photographs (which are not terribly numerous) there are few non-side or front images of the cars. This limits the reader's ability to really tell what the racers looked like "in life."

If you already have a book covering the Silver Arrow's racing history or engineering (like Karl Ludvigsen's) this volume would be a great addition.
If you just love cars and are curious about the ones covered by this book; it will be a good buy if you can find it for $30-ish, at current prices you need to be a true aficionado.

Short review on this one because the Amazon publisher's blurb really does a good job of describing what you'll be getting.
