3.0 out of 5 stars Game Review: B
This game is pretty fun! Not many cars to choose from (I think 20, but not sure). Has fairly many tracks and I recommend this game to cars racers and Mercedes lovers.

Many reviewers in magazines have been unfair to this title. I think in this case we have evidence of how "professional" gamers sometimes have very different criteria from those of the average console owner.

First off, the graphics are stupendous. Not just technically, but artisticaly. Someone with a great deal of knowledge of landscape painting must have worked very hard to create the worlds within this game. Real life never offers you such perfect vistas at every turn. All the cool flying stuff is also fun. Who cares if the "fantasy" graphics don't match the "simulation" handling? Why should they? Who really wants to drive on flat, boring race tracks like MotoGP? Why must realistic physics be accompanied by boring, mundane scenery?

Much more impressive, visually than Rallysport Challenge. Only Apex comes close to the graphic splendor here.

The cars and races do start off slow, but soon you get better cars, and you are flying, and getting a magnificent adrenaline rush.

Sure the A.I. is tough, but it's fair and smart.

Sure, also, if you drive off the course too much, collision detection becomes weird (you can pass through some objects). Thing is, you can just race the courses normally, on the track, and you will never notice this problem, as most objects near the road are fine. Most races require you to stay on the track anyway, and most racing tiles require the same. "Discovering" the landscape freely is just a funky add-on feature which, personally, I would have omitted. If you use plausible shortcuts (the ones TDK assumed you would use often), you will not notice lacking collision detection.

The reason for object collision problems with remote (far from road) objects is that if every one of the thousands of background objects had collision detection added to it, the Xbox would not be able to handle running the game. Collision detection takes up major processor cycles, and this game already pushes our little black and green friend to its limits with its huge, complex scenery, so the developers had to compromise.

The game also features many (MANY!!! Maybe the most ever in a game), highly varied and well designed tracks, a good, LONG and varied Championship mode (with humorous Missions to break up the racing), and is, after the first ten or so races, very fast and FUN.

Highly recommended for all gamers. Just don't judge it based on the first car you try, which is indeed floaty and slow. Also, if you want, slide the option parameter of simulation/arcade all the way to arcade for tighter control.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Graphics, March 14, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Mercedes-Benz World Racing (Video Game)
I have fifteen Xbox games, but none of them are even cloe to deliver the quality of graphics of Mercedes Benz. I was curious at first, Mercedes a Racing Game? but boy once you load the game, and start driving, you are having a hard time to keep your eyes on the road,:) it is absolutley amazing....it is so good, that in Germany they made a Dance Video clip with the footage from the game. A must Have!

5.0 out of 5 stars This game is FANTASTIC and LONG!, May 12, 2003
This review is from: Mercedes-Benz World Racing (Video Game)
Negative reviewers didn't give this game half a chance(if they even played it at all). Now I admit...it has its faults, but what game doesn't? This game has blazing speeds, fantastic graphics, stunning landscapes and tons of eye candy. I never-ever feel like I'm on ice or a banana peel, as another reviewer said(I don't know what game he's playing?). Also, the UFO's, planes flying around, etc. make the game interesting and extremely entertaining, not sure what's wrong with that. In the COCKPIT view you can look all around with the right joystick. It's a little jerky, but neat. In "FREE RIDE" mode I like to stop on a mountain and watch all the activity for a while. There is much to enjoy about this game and I think it deserves a fair shake.
It has it's occasional slow-down/frame-rate issues(many racers do) and the menu page is a little goofy(but can be figured out if you know how to read). That's all I can find wrong with this game. The BENEFITS outweigh the negatives a hundred times over. Over 100 track variations(some over 10 minutes for just one lap), 7 HUGE locations(go anywhere you want, because there's no 'time limit' or 'check points' to worry about and there's also a "FREE RIDE" mode) and over 100 variations of Mercedes-Benz cars. If you like to go blazing fast, want an interesting racing game and want a game that has more VALUE than several racing games combined then "WORLD RACING" is a must!

5.0 out of 5 stars 'WORLD RACING' is absolutely amazing..., May 9, 2003
This review is from: Mercedes-Benz World Racing (Video Game)
To those who rated this game poorly, I say, "YOU DIDN'T REALLY PLAY THIS GAME!" It blows 'Project Gotham' out of the water and it is 100 times more exciting. While 'Project Gotham' looks great, it has to be one of the most boring racers I've ever played(and I played it for weeks. Mainly because there was nothing else). Then 'Burnout', 'Test Drive', 'Test Drive:Off-Road', 'Quantum Redshift', and a couple other racers that escape my brain right now, hit the XBox and showed us just how boring 'Project Gotham' really was. Now before you freak out, I actually like 'Project Gotham', all I'm saying is it's boring. Really...it is! This is a fact that can't be disputed. So accept the truth and get on with life.
Well, 'World Racing' takes a street racer game and puts excitement into it. TONS OF EXCITEMENT! There are countless things going on. Parachuters, Stealth Bombers, Helicopters and DOZENS MORE(and that's NO exaggeration) and non of it is predictable. The background activities are on a timed loop, not "where you are on the course" loop. Thus removing anything predictable in the background. I also noticed the sun moved in a real time manner. If you play the game for a couple of hours the tracks start sunny and go dark, or visa-versa. If you race the same track over and over it will do the same thing. As though you've been racing that track all day. It's really neat to see. I find all this to be brilliant and definately raising the bar for racing games. The speeds are blistering, "BLISTERING!", I SAY! The tracks are very well done. Long straight aways and challenging corners. The landscapes are perfectly rendered. Beautiful and smooth, even BREATH-TAKING at times. The AI racers DO get predictable, but they can be very merciless at times. Thankfully there is a meter at the option screen that allows you to turn the AI's speed down. At times it is a very helpful option to apply.
This game is AMAZING to say the least. But it's not without its flaws. The MENU page took a little getting used to. It almost seemed confusing at first. Once I figured it out it no longer was an issue. My biggest complaint is there are occasional slow-down/frame-rate issues. I HATE SLOW-DOWN!!! I've played countless racers and I know that if developers just put in the extra time they can weed out the slow-down problems. Slow-down is a lack of effort on the developers part and that is unacceptable to me. If the game was released for 10 bucks then I'd let it slide. But console games have been released for 50 bucks every since the SuperNintendo(maybe as early as the Atari, I don't remember) and developers know this. With that said, the slow-down in 'WORLD RACING' is a "trade-off" type of thing. Some slow-down for lots and lots of entertainment. A trade I am very willing to make in this case. Maybe it's because there's over 100 tracks and tons of eye-candy. While SLOW-DOWN, to me, is video games "unforgiveable sin" this time I'll make an exception.
In final...This game really is amazing. The eye-candy is never ending and the speeds are so fast they match the feel of 'BURNOUT'(without the heavy traffic). This game is NOT boring and looks every bit as good as 'Project Gotham'. Worthy of an easy 6 stars out of 5 if they'd have fixed the slow-down issue. A MUST HAVE FOR ANY RACING FAN.

1.0 out of 5 stars A good game to rent, May 7, 2003
This review is from: Mercedes-Benz World Racing (Video Game)
I felt compelled to write this only after I felt ripped off by TDK. This game is so bad on so
many levels. The physics are slow and lazy. It's like that child's toy where you pull the small car around with a magnet underneath. The rear wheels drift back and forth on even the driest roads, while the front wheels are pinned to the ashpalt. And when you do slide...You don't hear skidding... your controls don't
shake... the back two wheels just slide back and
forth. Shame on TDK for trying to pass this off
as a real driving experience. This is not driving...
it's skiing.
-- Everything is boxy. The cars, landscape and hoky
ufo's and stealth fighter jets that fly above you (Are
they supposed to distract us from how horrible the
game is?)
--If you clip another car, you don't hear a noise..
you don't even get damage -- your sidepanel simply
passes through the other car's sidepanels like ghosts!
It's horrible!
-- the music is hoky... imagine elevator musac in a
retirement home.
-- the ambiance noise is just plain boring. It sounds like you've got the power of a 1978 pinto. The motors don't rev up!

...

Do your homework before buying this game. ...

1.0 out of 5 stars Just boring., April 2, 2003
By
This review is from: Mercedes-Benz World Racing (Video Game)
Nothing really to this game. Graphics are beautiful, of course, but instead of putting more effort into game play there are way too many objects floating around to distract from the driving. And once you get into the driving the cars feel really slow. The physics are fine, but it feels as if you are driving in mud. Once you get off road you can drive through trees, people and cows; comes off as lazy. The menus have to be the most confusing ever as well: very difficult to find out what you need to do. It also has the worst sound since the Apex racing . . .

I should stop now. I could continue on like this for awhile . . .

Though many critics have bashed this game, they seem to be failing at seeing what is so good about it. I personally haven't played it, but I can assure that more than one out of three players enjoy this title.
