5.0 out of 5 stars Death metal with a doom edge
Easily one of the best death metal albums ever
if you get tired of hearing the same old thing in the
death metal genre. Really doomy edge, with enough groove
and interesting twists on the usual stuff to keep
things moving. Great album.

3.0 out of 5 stars Bolt Thrower - 'Mercenary' (Metal Blade) 3 1/2 stars
British thrash band's seventh release. Nothing too brilliant to take in here, however I thought each of these tracks were at least reliable for what this particular music is meant for. Couple of the tunes I was digging include "Zeroed", title cut "Mercenary" and "Powder Burns". Line-up: Karl Willetts-vocals, Baz Thompson & Gavin Ward-guitars, Jo Bench-bass and Alex...

This CD is simply amazing! I purchased it nearly a year ago, and it still gets heavy rotation in my CD player!

Though not typically a fan of the "Death metal/grindcore" genre of music, Bolt Thrower pulls it off in a way that makes it enjoyable anyway. "Mercenary" takes you inside the mind of a military man who is trained to do nothing but kill, and boy do they do a good job!

Highly brutal, each song is a masterful portrayal of what it is like to be on the killing fields. This non-stop barrage of pounding guitars, thrashing drums, and growled vocals gives one the feeling of the anger and hatred coursing through the veins of a man at war.

Brutally honest, each song tells the listener of how the evils of war work on the minds of mankind. Songs like "Zeroed" speak of the deaths on a battlefield in a negative, sometimes sarcastic way. "Reduced to Zero... the sum of mankind." With lyrics like that, one gets a bleak view of what the future holds for humanity we allow the destruction to continue.

I would recommend this to ANY fan of any sort of metal, or just heavy music in general. This album is a masterpiece sure to please all who listen!

This is what death metal should sound like! Crushing, heavy, and will vocals that sound as if a guy got fused with a lion then let a blood-chilling and hair prickling roar! Karl is in top form here, his vocals are amazing and he just come at you with them like a MERCENARY on a mission to growl and destroy!!! MUHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! Alright what I said may not have made any sense, but I don't care this album is good and you'll buy it if you have any taste in metal at all.

5.0 out of 5 stars This album is excellent! Comprehendable lyrics-not noise., August 27, 1999

This is a very fine album. Anyone who has not heard "hard-core" can be introduced to this album and walk away with a better appriciation for this style of music. What is especially refreshing is that this piece lacks the satanic influence and stupidity that encompasses so many death-metal albums. A classic!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bolt Thrower has hit its stride. Perhaps their best., October 15, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Mercenary (Audio CD)
This is a great CD that gets better with each listen. Though not necessarily innovative, the music is so perfectly executed and the songs so carefully crafted that I just can't stop listening to it. The song quality is so consistent that it's impossible to rate any song as being better than the others. They're all great. I think this release signifies that BT has just hit it's stride.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bolt Thrower comes back strong, January 26, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Mercenary (Audio CD)
Bolt Thrower comes back with an album that doesn't break any new ground. That said, the album plays like an old friend. The great riffs, the melodies (yes, melodies), and grooves are all in your face and demand attention. Their previous album "...for Victory" was dominated with double bass "blast beats" and at times lacked variety. "Mercenary" finds the band moving back towards their "IVth Crusade" or even "Warmaster" days, creating an album with the variety and drive that made Bolt Thrower leaders of the scene in the first place. "Mercenary" is Bolt Thrower at their finest!

9 Smashing, powerfull songs. This band is never disappointing and made an album that can compete with the early successes. Keywords: heavy, slow and increasing tempo where needed.

4.0 out of 5 stars cool Grind/death/heavy metal, December 19, 2002

War is said to be the most cliche, used up, and tired subject in Heavy Metal. Bolt Thrower may have you forget that notion, especially after hearing such songs as "Zeroed," "Laid to Waste," and "No Guts, No Glory." Bolt Thrower mix in some great powerful melodies that don't take away from an image of battle portrayed in their music. The powerful double-base drumming is used perfectly, it is not something heard throughout the album non-stop, like such Grindcore bands as Mortician, Nasum, etc. This gives the music even more power. The lyrics are strong, meaningful, and not as violent as one would think. If you like their fellow "brit-core" scene members Benediction, I'm sure you'll enjoy this band and this album.
