Book Description

Being a national treasure wouldn't be such a curse if she only knew she could trust him.

Lady Eliza Harcourt, the queen's seer, is in danger of being kidnapped. To avoid such a fate, she will be whisked to safety during a royal masked ball. But when the man doing the whisking turns out to be Thomas Blackstone, she's no longer sure fleeing is a good idea.

Rejected by Eliza seven years earlier, Thomas has changed from the amiable second son of a lowly noble into a cold-hearted mercenary. Not only does she have to put up with the silent treatment, but she cannot be entirely certain he is on her side. The only thing she can be sure of is that he's still bitter about the rejection. And that she still loves him.

NOTE: The Mercenary's Price is a 23,000 word novella.

4.0 out of 5 stars GREAT ROMANCE February 18, 2011
By Brianna
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was a great little novella. I have always been a sucker for Historical Fiction but it has been ages since I read a Historical Romance; which was why I was hesitant at first to read this book. However I am so very glad I did! The author was well versed in the language and customs of the time era her characters lived in. C.J. Archer painted a wonderful picture and I could envision the book as if it were a movie. I enjoyed the theme of redemption and a second chance to make love work. Of course the ending was predictable but when I read romance I disregard that the ending is expected because it's ROMANCE! The boy and girl are supposed to live happily ever after in the end, I actually have no idea why anyone would expect otherwise is this genre. The author did a good job of immediately drawing the reader in with an almost palpable tension between the main characters and then was able to endure with that feeling right up to the end. BRAVO! I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Romance, especially because Romance lovers read for the swooning, intense emotions and forbidden loves, this book has all of that! Overall it was a fun, quick and entertaining read. I would definitely read other works from this author because I enjoyed her writing style. WELL DONE!

4.0 out of 5 stars Even the title didn't prepare me for that twist! May 3, 2011

C.J. Archer created a tightly packaged novella that is a quick, enjoyable read. It has everything Historical Romance needs... A beautiful leading lady, a handsome rouge for a leading man, unrequited love, a masked ball, notes written in lemon juice slipped under doors, and of course second chances. Our author develops each character quickly and dives right into the action. There is a twist in there that I didn't see coming- Hind sight? Yes, there were clues that could have given it away but I didn't see them(and I am not going to tell you either!). Once you start reading this one you won't be able to put it down. And yes, it is a ROMANCE they all end the same way. Folks that read romance know this- others should come prepared for the happily ever after and enjoy the ride that gets you there.

This is a clean romance, there are a few kisses -there are no bedroom scenes- though there is a tiny bit of suggestion and one sentence that made me giggle... "Oh My!" A great read! I devoured it in one sitting.

Novellas are nice afternoon reads, but I feel like I don't get the whole picture as when I read a full novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars How the world was populated. May 27, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I thoroughly enjoyed the historical blending of history, science, and romance. Historical, yet modern in a way that only a true romance novel can do. Sort a very enjoyable read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not wonderful May 24, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I enjoy this author's work and usually find it quite romantic, which is what I look for in historical romances. I'm not a fan of 'second chance' stories because there is usually hurt involved on one or both sides. This is no exception in that the h rejected the H's offer of marriage when she was just 17 and he was the second son of a Baron, with no prospects. We know that the h is the daughter of an Earl and expected by her mother to marry well. The h also states that she wasn't sure of her love for the H at that time. I mean for heaven's sake, she was still so incredibly young, it wasn't at all realistic that she'd throw it all away to run off with the H. He has held a grudge meanwhile, for 7 years. I found him quite unsympathetic, I hated what he did in revenge and there was no way the author could redeem him for me in the space of a few short pages.

The writing is good however and I will read more by this author in the future.
