1.0 out of 5 stars Outdated information
Although the Merck Manual is used by every veterinary student to prepare for the NAVLE exam, it is unfortunately a very outdated reference. The reviews written in such terms as "indispensable" and "on every veterinarian's desk" must be written by graduates from days long past. The Manual is still stuck in the 1970's and veterinary medicine has progressed far past it.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Merck Veterinary Manual (Hardcover)
We have been using the previous editions of "The Merck Veterinary Manual "for many years in our practice. We used the 8th edition of the book to prepare for the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE) also, and was very helpful for the same.

Pros
On a day-to-day practice basis, it provides all essential information, and serves as a ready reference book. Extensive coverage on the vast Veterinary topics in a comprehensive manner is the hallmark of the book. The price hike for the new edition seems reasonable. As different from the previous edition, the 9th edition has more pages devoted for Exotic animals, which I consider a welcome move since it is a fast developing Veterinary practice area. Likewise more pages are devoted for Toxicology, which also finds lot of applications in practice. More information is provided on some emerging diseases. We are still browsing through pages to find out other new additions.

Cones
Some very essential pictures, for example on ECG, Hematology etc. could have been included, instead of describing pages on these topics. Some more coverage on X-rays, it's interpretation are essential. This could be done in the on-line version of the book at least. Some more tables meant for ready reference in emergency medicine could have been included. The on-line version of the book seems not updated yet to the 9th edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like having a veterinarian on your farm everyday... 24/7 - 365, August 24, 2005
This review is from: The Merck Veterinary Manual (Hardcover)
To be without the Merck Manual is to be unequipped for life with livestock. Be sure to get the latest edition as medical technology and advances occur and you can be abreast of them, along with your veterinarian.
Written so that the lay person can understand, this tome is without a doubt a life-saver!

4.0 out of 5 stars Handy Manual, February 11, 2007
This review is from: The Merck Veterinary Manual (Hardcover)
If you have pets or livestock- then this book >may< be quite handy. I have used it several times to help with ailments, drug use, etc however- this is NOT a book meant to replace your own veterinarian. Don't even think it will. People who graduate vet school are trained professionals, the rest of us on the farm might have practical experience- and that is just one small part of animal health.

I am happy with mine- having a medical background helps in reading this as it is not meant for the lay reader. Would I buy it again, yes. Would I recommend it to the farmer down the road? No.

5.0 out of 5 stars Veterinary Help for the Non-Veterinarian, August 18, 2006
This review is from: The Merck Veterinary Manual (Hardcover)
This reference book is excellent for people with some knowledge
of medical care (I am a nurse). I always use the Merck Manual
for human info, but as a first-time dog owner who has a dog with
a few problems, I asked our vet if such a book existed for
veterinary issues. I was delighted when he told me that yes,
there is a Merck Veterinary Manual! The non-science minded
person might find the terminology daunting. The other book I
bought at the same time was
"The Five Minute Veterinary Consult", and I find that the two
books together give me all that I need in answers.

This is a book I would recommend to any vet school student. It will help you with diagnostic procedures, rule outs, and even help you review for the boards.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Merck Veterianry Manual, August 23, 2007
By
This review is from: The Merck Veterinary Manual (Hardcover)
As a medical professional, farm owner and provider of care for horses, dogs and cats, I have found this manual helpful. It provides clear information for the reader who has at least some knowledge of medical and veterianry vocabulary.
A copy of this important book should be on the shelf of every farm and livestock owner.

4.0 out of 5 stars Merck Veterinary Manual, September 24, 2008
By
This review is from: The Merck Veterinary Manual (Hardcover)
This book is meant for professionals working with many different types of animals. It contains a wealth of information which, although I am simply a dog owner, I have used in caring for my pets. However, a book meant for lay people that is easier to read and use might have been a wiser choice for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't beat it., December 1, 2007
This review is from: The Merck Veterinary Manual (Hardcover)
For the price you pay, you can't get more information anywhere else. Even though this info is all available online for free, it's so much easier to have the book in front of you!

5.0 out of 5 stars the book on every vet's bookshelf, November 20, 2008
This review is from: The Merck Veterinary Manual (Hardcover)
This is the reference guide that most every veterinarian has on his or her bookshelf. It includes vital basic information regarding the health for a number of species. My practice is limited to small animal internal medicine, so it sure is nice to have this book handy when I need to look something up pertaining to my goats or horses. This book has been a consistent seller for decades- that alone is evidence of its usefulness.
