Review

Merckx 525 is a unique collection of exclusive photographs, including some that even I had not seen before. It is the only work authorized by me…and the first truly complete record of my accomplishments.” — Eddy Merckx

“A luxurious photo-biography of cycling’s greatest champion…Full of evidence of the Cannibal’s insatiable appetite for victory.” — Wall Street Journal

“As a memento to a career we won’t see again, Merckx 525 is worth every stinkin’ penny… The real joy of this book was a chance to feast on images from the early part of Merckx’ career…Arranged chronologically, one can imagine the book as the ultimate family photo album of the star-shined favorite son.” — Red Kite Prayer

“Sumptuous, luxurious, and magnificent…A triumph. Each of its 221 pages simply scream out loud to satisfy the senses…Modern cycle sport is particularly well-served by some excellent photographers, but the imagery contained within Merckx 525 is exemplary.” — The Washing Machine Post

“One of the most beautiful coffee table books (cycling or not) to come around in a very, very long time…The images are incredibly compelling, layered and sometimes hauntingly quiet.” — Peloton

“What makes Merckx 525 so special is the trove of photographs that document that awesome number. Many of the photos were unknown to Merckx before the project was begun. [The authors] include the history when necessary, but the story is in the images, especially in the face of Merckx.” – Paved magazine

“If you relish the racing history that has helped define the sport, Merckx 525 should be a ‘must have’. The variety of seldom-seen photos that illustrate the book will take your breath away.” — Road Bike Action

“Whether in beautifully judged black & white or shockingly real period colour film, Merckx’s foe-crushing drive glows from almost every photograph.” — Brooks England

“As one leafs through this lovely book, the string of victories becomes overwhelming…It is wonderful to see Merckx in his heyday, with the eternal grin and the pure joy in his face as he crossed the finish line first.” — PezcyclingNews

“Visually stunning…[Merckx 525] delivers some incredible images from various periods of Merckx’s career. Each image is simply dripping in nostalgia…” — Podium Café

Merckx 525 captures the raw effort of bike racing, with the backdrop of Europe as Merckx’s canvas. His life, both private and professional, is laid out for the world to witness.” — Bicycle Times

“…without a doubt the most comprehensive and detailed bio of ‘The Cannibal’ that you’ll find in the English language.” — BikeWorldNews.com

“The elves at VeloPress have done it again: this is another one of those must-own books for the cycle-phile on your gift-buying list.” — Boston.com

There have been plenty of books written about cycling's "Babe Ruth" including some other just-released ones we've yet to read. Why should we at CycleItalia care about Eddy, after all he's not even Italian? Maybe because he won almost all the Italian races there were to win, including Milano-San Remo SEVEN times, the Giro d'Italia FIVE times and the GIro di Lombardia twice? He did this on bicycles made by Masi, DeRosa or Colnago fitted with Campagnolo components while on teams named FAEMA or MOLTENI and speaks fluent Italian. He was inducted into the Giro d'Italia hall of fame just this year and had a profound effect on Italian cycling history.
So an Italian cycling fan should be a Merckx fan and and should add this book to their collection. Why? While other books, especially Eddy Merckx by Rik Vanwalleghem (another Velo Press title) do an excellent job of describing the Cannibal, as Merckx was known, it's the photos in MERCKX 525 that make it special. They show the raw, animal and youthful spirit of a young Eddy that just jumps off the printed page in a way it can not on a computer screen.
The progression of Merckx from the raw, exuberant youth to grizzled warrior is revealed as you turn the pages. As they say, this is the only "authorized" biography and offers wonderful photographs, some that even Eddy claims HE had not seen before. Well worth the price for your collection. Every fan of cycling knows the name Eddy Merckx. His record of race victories stands above all others. For the great Eddy Merckx to be seen in the detail put together in this book is indeed rare. Many images are seen here for the first time, and show the reader a more intimate view of the man and his life while racing. The stories, many in his own words, are alone worth owning the book. To have all the excellent photographs together with them is a great accomplishment, and a welcome treat.

This is primarily a photo history of Merckx' career with short bios of key races. It is not a critical biography and lightly passes over controversy, such as the '69 Giro doping scandal. The photos are wonderful but the production/paper quality does not do them justice. Better quailty in these areas would have been worth the added expense. Despite that, a book worth having if you are a Merckx fan.

When friends visit and complain about the state of cycling in this post-Lance era, hand them this wonderful book. It's a joy to read, to look at, and even just to hold in your hands. Pure class in every way, just the way Eddy Merckx was in his prime, and still is, in his retirement.

Not nearly enough text! Tons of photos (great!) but many with no captions or reference to date, race, etc!
this book was a huge letdown.
