MODERN CLASSIC--AND SO MUCH FUN!!!, September 27, 2002
This review is from: Mercy (Audio CD)
I was late coming to the Bryan Duncan party--this CD was my introduction to him. As much as I love the work he did prior to this CD (STRONG MEDICINE, ANONYMOUS CONFESSIONS OF A LUNATIC FRIEND, WHISTLIN' IN THE DARK, et al) and the work he has done since (BLUE SKIES, SLOW REVIVAL, THE LAST TIME I WAS HERE, JOYRIDE, et al), I don't think he has ever topped this CD for pure emotional output within a spiritual context and just great melody lines and musical hooks. This CD is in my regular rotation and would be on my very short list of "favorite" contemporary Christian CDs.
Nobody is going to confuse Duncan with Michael Card--or even Wes King or Steve Camp--in terms of depth and scriptural content. This isn't "rocket science" Christianity. Duncan presents what he is really experiencing every day into his songs and delivers them with that same emotion and passion. It isn't a theology class; it doesn't have to be. The basic premises of "Love Takes Time," "You Don't Leave Me Lonely," "I'll Not Forget You," "Step by Step," "Faithful to You," and "Into My Heart," among the rest, are just the everyday, common sense experiences that most people go through. Duncan manages to capture that emotion, frustration, pain, trust, joy, and faith all together in a spectacular set of songs (I could do without "Five Smooth Stones"--he just should have stopped at "I'll Not Forget You"). The songs mean so much, because we can all relate to them in some way, shape, or form.
Duncan has incredible chops, too. Nobody, regardless of genre, can deliver a song with his passion and clarity. The uniqueness of his voice has served him well throughout his career, from "Screaming Machine" to the more mature singer he has grown to be. It's hard to imagine the same artist recording both ANONYMOUS CONFESSIONS. . . and QUIET PRAYERS, yet somehow he pulls off both with great results.
Bottom Line: This is one of the best CDs to listen to in the car, in the house, or anywhere else, no matter what kind of mood you're in or what style you are looking for. I keep reaching for this CD, among his many others, whenever I want a challenge, reassurance, or just to jam. That's a tricky combination to accomodate. This is on my very short list of "favorite" Christian CDs. It might not hold up to Michael Card's SCANDALON or KNOWN BY THE SCARS, but it's a lot more fun!!! That's worth something, even in the world of Christendom!

The MP3 Download for "Love Takes Time" is not the remix!, May 16, 2008
It's a great album, no doubt about it. For those of you browsing the MP3 downloads, however, beware. The preview for the track "Love Takes Time" plays the remix version (which I'm looking for) but once you download it, you discover it is actually the standard track on the album (not that there's anything wrong with that track it's just not what Amazon is advertising with the preview.)
Perhaps they will correct the error and remove my review. That would be better than another person paying for something they didn't get.
