A former army nurse brings her brand of no-nonsense care to a New Jersey hospital in NBC's Mercy. In the pilot, Veronica Flanagan Callahan (Taylor Schilling, Atlas Shrugged: Part 1) and her contractor-turned-bar owner husband, Mike (Diego Klattenhoff, The Dark Knight Rises), get back together, though she still carries a torch for Dr. Chris Sands (Klattenhoff's Men in Trees costar James Tupper), with whom she served in Iraq, while her nursing colleagues include hardened veteran Sonia (Rescue Me's Jaime Lee Kirchner) and wide-eyed newbie Chloe (Gossip Girl's Michelle Trachtenberg).

Creator Liz Heldens cut her teeth on Friday Night Lights, but Mercy doesn't aim for the same kind of documentary realism--location shooting aside--though Ronnie's posttraumatic stress disorder lends her connection to Chris deeper resonance. During the season, she also treats a homeless man (Kevin Corrigan), who suffers from the same affliction. And if Dr. Harris (James LeGros) starts out as a stock villain, his sympathetic side emerges following a personal setback, after which Dr. Briggs (James Van Der Beek) arrives to irritate everyone. The medical cases don't make as much of an impression, but they cover most conditions, from cancer (guest star Elisabeth Moss) to Alzheimer's disease (Peter Gerety, who plays Ronnie's father).

With few exceptions, the characters are as morally compromised as the ones who populate Grey's Anatomy, to which Mercy serves as a blue-collar answer, right down to the will-they-or-won't-they dance between Ronnie and Chris, which stalls when he dates another doctor (Tupper later segued to the ABC series). Unfortunately, NBC passed on a second season, despite a stellar supporting cast, including Guillermo Díaz and Kate Mulgrew, who enliven the proceedings every time they appear on screen. This boxed set comes complete with interviews, two cast and crew commentaries, and a gag reel. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Product Description

From the co-executive producer of Friday Night Lights comes the intense and heartfelt drama Mercy. Nurse Veronica Flanagan Callahan (Taylor Schilling, Dark Matter) has recently returned to her hospital job after a volatile tour in Iraq, and knows more about medicine than all of the residents combined. In order to navigate the domestic landmines of her personal and professional worlds, she’ll need the camaraderie of her fellow nurses Sonia Jimenez (Jaime Lee Kirchner, Rescue Me) and Chloe Payne (Michelle Trachtenberg, Gossip Girl). This 5-disc set contains all 22 episodes presented uninterrupted in Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound and includes a stellar ensemble cast featuring James Tupper (Men in Trees), Diego Klattenhoff (Supernatural), Guillermo Diaz (Weeds), James Le Gros (Ally McBeal) and a guest appearance by James Van Der Beek (Dawson’s Creek). Bold, realistic and instantly gripping, Mercy is unlike any depiction of the medical community you have seen before.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE show about real illness, doctors, nurses and PTSD August 19, 2010
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
In a country that just returned several hundred thousand people who will likely suffer from PTSD, horrific that the one show they can identify with where it is talked about is cancelled.

The one show which has anorexia, has chronic illnesses, has home care (which, with the baby boomers hitting mid sixties is a big topic), has the urban realism of nurses who have to try to speak up for patients. That care extends to protecting an intersex girl being treated in a way by a group of male doctors that would get them arrested outside of a hospital, to openly talking about the reality of child sex abuse - by parents. It is more than just the `puzzle of the week' or the `horrific injury of the week' but about realizing that care is beyond just medicine and that hospitals are where we are at our worst, and we are terrified. And nurses are the faces we see who make the difference in believing someone cares or not. But they are people too, and that caring comes with a cost.

I am tired of shows of superstar doctors or all about the diagnostics. I have a dozen friends or relatives with conditions, and horror stories to go with them. The best thing is getting a nurse that gives a damn (and a doctor who can see beyond their ego). This IS PTSD, this is medical conditions, this IS life.

This is the writer who gave the only realistic representation of a quad on television in Friday Night Lights season one, both in treatment/rehab and socially in the community. I'll watch whatever she writes or produces.

I didn't go into watching this show expecting much, but it's silly and fun and thoroughly replaced Grey's Anatomy in my life. And honestly it's one of only a couple shows from this past season that I actually want to spend my money on. It contains solidly the best work Michelle Trachtenberg and James Van Der Beek have ever done, and Taylor Schilling is refreshing in the lead role.

If you liked Grey's Anatomy at its best, seriously check out Mercy. Now if only we could get another network (USA, Lifetime) to pick it up so we could ever find out the resolution to the season ending cliffhangers. Sigh.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love Mercy! June 3, 2010
Format:DVD
Mercy blew me away. The actors are wonderful! It should have never been canceled! I first starting watching this show because I'm a nursing student, but then I absolutely fell in love. The three main characters can ACT! I mean, really act! The series seemed so real and original. This is definitely a good buy!

I liked the show, but found it was disappointing in some spots. The story lines were ok, but some of the character flaw weren't that believable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Needed an ending
The end of the series was a cliffhanger, stupid NBC. This was needed to satisfy the ending of a great series that should never have been cancelled :-(

It's not bad, but not especially good, either. I did not see it when it was on tv, so had no real knowledge of what to expect. I didn't keep it. I would not watch it again. Read more
