Book Description

November 1, 2007

"Rare and fantastic."-The Philadelphia Inquirer

"London's dark heart has seldom been exposed with such surgical precision. Brutal, mesmerizing stuff."-Ian Rankin

"Highly recommended for adult mystery collections."-Library Journal (starred review)

"A beautifully written and constructed thriller. . . . Raw violence explodes on almost every page, and there are some artfully awful villains."-Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"A powerful writer who creates memorable characters who live in the memory as well as on the page. The Mercy Seat flies, with no stop in the action and tension. The skillful dialogue reminds me of Ken Bruen."-Otto Penzler

"An ambitious, tautly plotted thriller that offers a stark antidote to P.D. James' cozy world of middle-class murder. A huge talent."-Time Out London

"A sometimes brutal, sometimes poetic journey through the dark heart of modern London, and confirms Waites as of the brightest stars in British crime writing."-John Connolly

A research scientist has gone missing. An ace newspaper reporter has disappeared and so has a minidisk, along with its incriminating evidence. And a teenage hustler is on the run. In his pursuer, the Hammer, a skin-headed professional killer, the principle of evil has indeed been made flesh.

Unsettling and unpredictable, this compelling page-turner delivers point-blank its every unexpected narrative hit, twist, and turn as it leads protagonist Joe Donovan to the terror of the mercy seat.

4.0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Author of 2009, February 21, 2010

This review is from: The Mercy Seat: A Joe Donovan Thriller (Paperback)
Martyn Waites is my favorite new author of 2009. I never heard or read anything by this author until this past year. I stumbled upon his work during one of my visits to my local library. While looking at the book, the librarian came over and mentioned that if I like Michael Connelley, I will love this book. Upon her recommendation, I borrowed it. Boy, could she not have been more right. The story (series) revolves around four characters, Joe Donovan being the main character. Joe was an ex-reporter who is contemplating suicide ever since the day he lost his son while shopping. He blames himself and is constantly searching for his son, not believing he is dead until he finds the body. Because of this, he loses his job, marriage and his daughter comes to hate him. Joe is a beaten man until a deal comes his way that will renew his efforts in the search of his son. The other three characters are just as deep and interesting as Joe. Where Martyn beats Michael is in the continuity of story. Each book (currently 3 books released) contains a single story to entrall the reader, but Martyn never forgets to move the main story arc along, Joe's search for his son. I never liked how Hieronymus Bosch in Michael's story never seemd to grow and evolve. Every time Michael would start to change Bosch's world, he would always undo it by the next book. So far, I like the direction where Martyn Waites has been going and I hope he continues it.
