5.0 out of 5 stars Full-page color drawings by Chris Van Dusen are hilarious accompaniments
Kate DiCamillo's MERCY WATSON: PRINCESS IN DISGUISE is the fourth pig tale in the best-selling series: this centered around Halloween on Deckawoo Drive, and the perfect costume for Mercy. Full-page color drawings by Chris Van Dusen are hilarious accompaniments to the story of a pink pig who tries to become a princess on Halloween.

3.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but not Spectacular
This book was a simple book for kids to read during Halloween season. The story was cute, but not spectacular. The images were adorable.

I bought this book for my 1st grade daughter. She wanted chapter books. She is not too much interested in reading by herself but with this book not only she reads but she wants to keep reading to find more about the story. Plus the illustrations are nice and funny. I am on Amazon tonight to buy the other 3 books. In fact, I suggest buying this Mercy Watson: Princess in disguise first and if you like it then the box has the other 3 titles. Its more for K-1, it might be easy for 2nd graders. Hopefully the author will come out with more soon.

Mercy Watson Princess in Disguise is yet another grand slam for Kate Dicamillo! Our favorite domestic pig, Mercy, experiences the joys of butterball candy and trick or treating. Great fun for kids of all ages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mercy me!, January 29, 2010

We have a great niece who hates to read. I was recommended these particular DiCamillo books as they are beginner readers and surely capture attention. Our niece is old for this book, nearing 10, but the stories are silly, funny and have meaning.

With the Mercy stories (of the adorably-ugly pet pig) our niece began to appreciate the author. I always talk of the 'creative brain' or ask 'how do you think she thought up this story?!'...Now she has read these books and we have helped her move on to a more matured reading (still a challenge since there are less pictures) of Winn Dixie.

This fun character Mercy is a good way to engage the non reader. I think the book is a little more engaging for a younger child, unless the child is not strong in reading, then try this and then move on! Good luck!

My 4 year old picked up Mercy Watson from the library counter and we have fallen in love. I'm really not sure which I love more --- text or illustrations? Text wins ONLY because were it not for the idea there would be no illustrations. We read a minimum of one a day. I've got them all sitting in the closet waiting for her birthday --- she will be thrilled to KEEP them instead of just checking them out.

There is one danger though with this series ---- I've had to explain that "toast with a great deal of butter on it" is really not the best breakfast option. We have done it though --- on a blue plate no less. But it's a "special" event when she gets to play the pig. The other day she was "narrowing her eyes" as she decided to scoot over in a seat. Cracks me up. All of this is from the series --- the books are beautifully interwoven.

And Chris Van Dusen's illustrations deserve accolades as well. I found myself flipping from book to book and from one illustration to another to see if I could catch a mistake. They are illustrated photographs I swear. He captured our hearts ---- we ordered his books (A camping spree with Mr. Magee, Down to the Sea with Mr. Magee, If I Built a Car) and would highly recommend them all. Cute books --- great rhyming. The Magee books are the best but we got a kick out of finding Mr. Magee and Dee (his dog) pictured in the If I Built a Car book.

We own all of Mo Willems' stuff ---- I didn't need yet another illustrator and series to be so enthralled with!

My four year old loves these stories. Mercy Watson is a hilarious character - with or without her homemade princess dress. I love Eugenia Lincoln and my son loves Baby Lincoln. We got into these books since Chris Van Dusen is the illustrator. His pictures add genius to all of the Mercy Watson characters. Every child will love this 'porcine wonder' series. We started with the first three and he wanted more. My son is four but this book is definitely appropriate for older children as well. The books are a bit long for kids under 4. I would highly recommend the Mercy Watson books!!
