5.0 out of 5 stars Mercy Watson (and Kate D.) to the rescue, January 29, 2008

What a great addition to the early chapter book category. Humor, great characters, real linear storytelling and eye-popping illustrations make these books a real breath of fresh air for early readers. My young (struggling) reader was bringing home thin, uninspiring early readers until her teacher added Mercy Watson to the read-alouds. I knew we had a hit (and a breakthrough) when my child brought them on vacation, raced through them reading silently to herself. Just one problem, we've finished the series and will have to wait six months for the next one. If you're child is having difficulty getting "into" books, these make make a big difference.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great set for 4+ year olds, December 28, 2007

Very cute set of stories about a couple who have a "pet" pig named Mercy who they treat like their child. Great illustrations and fun story line. My 4-1/2 year old son just got these for Christmas and loves them. The illustrator has done some other books that are excellent ("If I Built a Car") which I also highly recommend. This gift set is hard back and of very nice quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great "Advanced" Chapter Books, May 1, 2008

This series is a great set of chapter books for kids who have gotten beyond "early reader" chapter books that also enjoy humor in what they read. The central characters, who make repeat performances in each book, add to the delight of the story because of their offbeat personalities. I am not sure how the author decided to feature a pig that eats toast, but it is pure genius that will delight both the young reader and parents as well. I think I looked forward to the new "Mercy" installments as much as my son did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great series, August 26, 2010
This review is from: Mercy Watson: Three-Treat Collection: Slipcased Gift Set (Hardcover)
We have been searching for a series that is beyond Early Reader yet still has pictures. My 6-year old son is in love with this series. I wish there were one hundred of these books so they could satisfy his love of reading. For those looking for longer chapters but still have the pictures to entertain the younger readers, this series is great!

5.0 out of 5 stars If you love the sound of children's laughter, buy these., August 21, 2010

I have purchased multiple copies of the Mercy Watson books for kids (boys and girls) ranging in age from 5 to 9 years old (and a few adults too). My kids LOVE this series. If I even pause to yawn during a bedtime reading, my son (previously a reluctant reader) will pick up where I left off and take over reading. The characters are so fun and memorable that my kids and I find ourselves bringing them up and sharing a good laugh when something (or someone) reminds us of them.

As a recently laid off worker, I would have felt better about these books if they were printed in the United States. In the current complicated world and global economy, the stories in these books bring me back to a simpler happier time...irony?

Kids will get a lot out of these books even if they are not reading independently because the illustrations will hook them.

This series ranks in the top 2 or 3 for books that make my kids want to read on their own. This makes my job super easy when I tell them it is time to do their 30 minutes of reading homework. The Lexile (reading difficulty) looks like it is in the 400's compared to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (810) and Green Eggs and Ham (30) and One Fish Two Fish (180).

Wondering if you should just get it on loan from the library?... My kids are not getting sick of these; I am glad we have our own copy.

We are hoping that Kate Di Camillo is busy writing more Mercy Watson books because we have read all of them, and we want more! :)

These books are delightful with fun illustrations. My daughter is going into second grade. Depending on your childs reading level, these books would be great for K-3rd. I have noticed my older children reading them though as there is often a humorous story line , along with the illustrations that make it fun to read. I found myself laughing when I read them to my youngest child.

This is a really beautiful boxed set and a great value. All of the books are hardcover and the illustrations in this delightful series are very colorful. My son is learning to read and I chose this series because the chapters are small, and the story lines are fun and enjoyable. This will definitely keep the interest of your young reader. Ever since we started this series my boys request "toast with a great deal of butter" for breakfast and I can't help but laugh. Very fun.

These books are great. Stories are fun and illustrations are bold and engaging. It's too bad that the cover got dented in shipping. Could have sent it back, but it was a gift and I didn't have time to ship it back. :(

I bought this gift set for my almost 4-year old granddaughter not realizing they were chapter books. We have to split them up because I'm afraid she loses interest before we get to the end of the book. I think as she gets older and her attention span increases, she will absolutely love them.
