Book Description

Mercedes Cruz is a bruja—or witch, in Spanish. Just like many first generation sons and daughters of immigrant parents, Mercy has embraced America, it's culture, and its customs in their entirety. But Brujeria or Mexican Witchcraft is tied deeply with Mercy's heritage and her family's past, and because she's neglected such a large chunk of her identity, Mercy now stands as a stunted witch in her 30's.

Mercy, a single mother to a five year old daughter who may also share her attributes, has decided to start her own private investigative firm in the heart of Orange County, California. She's chosen to use her budding supernatural talents to recruit business, solve difficult cases, and help those in the community who lack a voice and who may be too afraid to report crimes due to their legal status. Possibly leaving criminals to freely exploit those choosing to live in the shadows.

In this introduction to the Mercedes Cruz series, Mercy's Magic, our budding detective and witch takes on a case near and dear to her heart. A family friend and her ex-husband's best and most trusted employee has gone missing. While investigating his disappearance, Mercy soon finds out the consequences of neglecting the tutelage of her Aunt Itzel throughout the years, a great and powerful bruja in her own right. Mercy learns a life-changing lesson when she encounters a mysterious and foreboding being, whose dark and brooding powers dwarf her unrealized potential.

MERCY'S MAGIC (Witch Mysteries #1) is P.J. Day’s fifth novel, and Elizabeth Basque's tenth novel.

1.0 out of 5 stars Horrible plot November 27, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Genre fiction is full of strong virtuous women who fall for bad boys--but never before for a truly evil one. The minute the heroine decided a love potion was the only way to beat a more powerful mage, I lost all respect for the character and the author. This is the kind of solution a teenager might think up--not an adult. The reader never sees the heroine making real use of her magical gifts--even the love potion is created by someone else. (The character actually admits she's too lazy to practice.) And while the heroine finds and rescues the one man she has been hired to find, she ignores the larger mystery of what the man was abducted to accomplish. Oh, of course by that time she's sleeping with the villain responsible, so I guess she's not worried about what happened to all the counterfeit money they printed.

I won't be reading anything further in this series or by these authors. If you really want a good paranormal mystery involving the hispanic magic tradition, read Juliet Blackwell's Lily Ivory novels.

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't Put It Down! September 21, 2013
By Chris C
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed this book. Mercy, a single mom, who is trying to make it as a PI, is also a witch. Helping her ex husband with a missing persons case, she encounters some dark magic and an evil she may not be ready for. This book has some great characters, and I can't wait to read more about them! It also had an ending that I 100% did not see coming! Loved it!

Recommend this entertaining mystery, suspense, and romance that makes an interesting witchcraft story POP with excitement. P.J. Day and Elizabeth Basque are co-authors of: A Mercedes Cruz Novel MERCY'S MAGIC (The Witch Mysteries #1). Research explains that `Brujeria' is Mexican Witchcraft and, in this story, Mercy and relatives are recipients of inherited special gifts. Paranormal behaviors are the norm as potion-mixes are learned.

Mercy is the mother of Terra who is showing paranormal signs for anticipating upcoming activities. Like mother, Terra perceives accidents that make her a target for suspicion among her peers. At this point, she knows little about her heritage and gifts. Even her dad is not privy to her peculiarities. But, then, he and mom have split.

In fact, Mercy should have been keeping up with the family mysteries because the time has come when she must save her friend and neighbor. Until now, Mercy is in business and has the expertise and skills of a PI.

Since she is a novice and behind on her homework, Mercy has limited use of witchcraft that suddenly becomes the life-saving gift to intervene in a frightening and dangerous encounter. Fast learner that she is comes in handy. Mercy finds the concealed whereabouts of her friend's husband and the reason for his disappearance.

Now the plot thickens. Get ready for chills and funny moments in crisis because Mercy is about to meet Ariel, a gorgeous hunk, who tries to capture her essence through his very own brand of witchcraft.

Ariel is difficult to resist. And his mansion is a trap of dark secrets.

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay book, love the magic! December 27, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Mercy Cruz has just started her own Private Investigator business when she is asked to work on a case the hits close to home. Oh, and she is also a witch! When Mercy realizes that is case may or may not have some supernatural stuff involved, she pulls out the big guns to help her out: brujeria. Unfortunately, things don't go as planned and the magical mess that's she made might just get her in trouble.

First of all, I really loved the concept of this book! I absolutely LOVE witches and magic but have never read a book with brujas (as in Mexican withes) before. As a Mexican American myself, I have heard about brujeria before from my mom and other family members. But the thing is, whenever it is talked about, it usually has a negative connotation attached to it. It's always about curses and the evil eye and that makes me sad! As I said, I love magic, and I'd like to think that it could be used for good... but perhaps I watch too much Charmed ;)

And that's what initially caught my attention: Brujeria being used to do good things! Now, Mercy isn't the most experienced witch, but her intentions are good, and I really liked that about her! All that trouble (and magic!) she went through to save a beloved friend...I really admire her. Though she did something stupid to get what she wanted and I was yelling at my poor Kindle about what an idiot she was, but I did understand why she did it. Can you say, spell?

The one thing however, was that the book felt too short for me to really connect with the main character or get to know the other characters better, so there wasn't that emotional bond with the book that I like to have. On the other hand, I like short books!

5.0 out of 5 stars An unique story! December 10, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I received this book in exchange for my honest review. Thank you Itching for Books and P.J. Day for giving me the chance to read Mercy's Magic.

Every time I start a new series, I am afraid that there will be a cliffhanger and I will have to wait for the next book to come out. This book, this story left me with a need for some answers. A lot of questions are developing in my mind, but I have to wait. Despite that, the book it’s well written, I jumped right into the story and I liked every single page. Now, I can’t wait for the next one in the Mercedes Cruz series.

Our main character is Mercedes, who is a great mother to a fiver years old daughter Terra. She adores her baby girl. She works as a private investigator, and her latest mission is helping her ex-husband trying to find a missing person. That missing person is a close friend of her, and that makes the mission even more important. Mercy asks a dear friend of hers to help with the investigation, and he is a police officer, Detective Joe Patterson. But, he doesn't help her just because he is her friend, Joe has feeling for her.

Mercedes isn't just a mom and a private investigator, she is also a witch. Despite her aunt encouragement to follow her studies with the witch craftiness at school, Mercy didn't learn anything and she needs to deal with her powers and fast. Nobody knows, she kept it a secret even from her ex-husband. And that is a lot to deal with. When she finds her friend, she realizes this is a good time for her to use her powers. There are much stronger forces and she needs her powers. But what can she do? Will Mercy be capable of saving her friend and come with the terms of being a witch?

This story had a lot of twists and turns and that made it even more interesting.

3.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Easy Read!
This is a quick and easy light story to read when you just want something to pass the time. I wouldn't put a lot of money into buying the series, but at the price, it's just fine.
