5.0 out of 5 stars Better Than Average June 20, 2010
By Kay
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
I had heard of Shout Out Louds, Spoon, and The Clientele, but I had never heard any songs by them (aside from Spoon's "Underdog," of course) so I jumped at the opportunity to check out these tracks. It isn't the best sampler I've ever found here (that honor belongs to "Barsuk Records: 2009 Amazon Digital Sampler") but there is a good mix of songs that I enjoyed immediately and songs that I know will grow on me easily.

The review by fle-pics already gave the best advice though, just listen to "the 30-second samples and if it sounds like your kind of music, then ... you won't be disappointed." I can't really say it better! Good call.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Sampler is a Keeper May 24, 2010
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
I downloaded this sampler yesterday and have listened to it three times today--there's not a song in the bunch that I'm tempted to delete from the collection. Give a few of the 30 second samples a try and if it sounds like your kind of music, then do yourself a big favor and download the album. You won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awww snap... May 5, 2010
By Tejana
Format:MP3 Music
This freebie is so full of win and awesomness that proper words escape me. One of the best downloads on Amazon to be sure - no tiring beats or boring, repetitive pop lyrics - just pure music that you could play alone or in a full car and enjoy.

3.0 out of 5 stars A mixed bag, but with some nice gems September 10, 2011
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
So there's fourteen songs to this one, and since there's nothing except for a certain independent attitude and the same label uniting them-- quality varies a lot. Of course this is to my taste, and a lot of people will disagree. This is what you're in for:

1. "Horses Warriors" by Radar Brothers (often known as Radar Bros.) [3/5]
This is a mellow, jangly folk rock tune that reminds me a bit of Fleet Foxes. It seems overdone to me, with strings and other background material overwhelming the core of the song. The vocals also sound whiny and otherwise unappealing to me. Not a bad song... but not that good either...

2. "I Won't Lie to You" by Let's Wrestle [5/5]
Now this is a fun tune. It's a loose kind of tune with a pop punk and garage rock style. Think of early 70s punk such as the Jam, Buzzcocks, and the Automatics. This one is messy, sloppy, and pretty catchy.

3. "The Very Modern Dance" by Destroyer [4/5]
This is a piano centered indie pop tune with deliciously sarcastic and whimsical vocals. It reminds me a bit of the Rocky Horror Picture show-- show-tunes with a spiked twist. The energetic piano playing near the end of the song is particularly nice.

4. "Fall Hard" by Shout Out Louds [5/5]
This is a pretty solid pop rock tune. Although the lyrics are pretty generic, the vocals have this begging sincerity to them. The guitars have this surf-rock-ish vibe that gives somewhat of a 60s feel to me. Overall, I like the mellow, dreamy feel to this one.

5. "Written In Reverse" by Spoon [5/5]
Spoon has a strong fanbase (I'm not a fan myself) that will be sure to love this one. On the song's own merits, it's great.

Worth checking out if you like to avoid the main stream radio artists. I wasn't disappointed. Thanks Merge Records for the sampler.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Music March 5, 2013
By Jonas
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
I didn't know most of the artists and got it knowing that there was a She & Him on it. I thoroughly enjoyed the sampler; however, I didn't love it simply due to it being a sampler I wouldn't to listening constantly. I definitely recommend it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Some of the worst music you will not want to listen to.
Incredible awful and boring music. If this is the best Merge has to offer, then it will fold. Unoriginal, uninspiring performances from people who are unoriginal and uninspired. Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Songs okay
Sampler. Hard Rock. Ballads. C&W influences. Songs okay. Music just okay. I've only listened several times but now I can't bear to sit and goes through it.

2.0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for
Got to the fourth track, a ballad, when the explicit language begins. I would like to have good music without profanity.

3.0 out of 5 stars Meh
Could be these tunes aren't my taste. I like Indie, blues, roots. This was unfortunately a no-saver for me though.

3.0 out of 5 stars It was free so..
I downloaded it because She & Him had a song on there. but the other songs lacked greatness. It was good for the price.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice for a pick-me-up
Another decent indie sampler that's great for background music or a little pick-me-up. Not insanely great but good enough for a few listens!
