I received my Merge VR goggles on 23 Nov 2015. The goggles work exactly as advertised. I use my iphone 6 and the effect is striking, especially with earphones. The technology of the smart phones is clearly in place to provide compelling and entertaining content. I have one small quibble. The two buttons on top to move the lenses to optimize the view don't stay in place. You have to hold them or they drift apart. I need some kind of spring device to hold the lenses in position. I can figure out a work-around. (work-around! a tight rubber band holds them perfectly together!) Aside from that, this is the perfect introduction until the 2016 VR tsunami sweeps in..!

I'm getting my first taste of virtual reality. VR is something I've been very interested in trying out and the first tech I could get my hands on is mobile VR. Merge VR sent me this headset specifically for review. It works with your smart phone to deliver an interactive experience, but is there actually anything worth watching or playing on it yet? Let's find out in this tech review.

The Merge VR headset works with your smartphone in order to create a virtual reality experience. The phone handles the display and the headtracking. The headset is a container for the phone and also has the lenses which give you that virtual reality perspective.

Merge actually curates a few apps and videos on their website which is perfect because all of us are new to VR we don't actually know what to use it for. I dabbled in a few different games and presentations, but most of these are just basically tech demos. The richest content I found was actually right here on Youtube.

Playing a Youtube video is as simple as choosing a video with the #360video tag, hitting the google cardboard button, and then inserting it into the headset. From there the buttons on the top can let you pause or play the video. The buttons on top actually push a lever that will touch the screen. The two controls on the top also adjust the focus of the lens for your eyes. Pushing them apart can make it wider while pushing it towards the center will make it narrower. Everyone has different eye widths so this will allow you to fit the goggles specifically for your eyes.

When you wear it the combination of all these features brings you into the world.

Being an industrial designer I was drawn to these goggles over others for various reasons including, the soft material used, ease of use, and simplicity. The lens quality is great compared to other headsets I've tried. When I first tired these out I was really happy with how immersed I felt and by how comfortable the goggles are. I did however notice two tiny spots of light coming through from the top where the lens slider buttons are. This wasn't a huge deal however it did take away from the total immersion experience. I'm using my iPhone 6 plus with the goggles and one of the reasons I chose this product was because of the video on their website showing a 6 plus being used with it.

The phone is snug going in and coming out but the goggles really are not built for the iphone 6 plus. I've been using my goggles for close to a month and the edges where the phone gets inserted are tearing. I treat this product with great care and am certain that I was not being rough with it. If not for the tearing I would have been happy giving the goggles a 5 star review. If you have a smaller phone these may be the goggles for you but IF YOU HAVE AN iPhone 6 PLUS DO NOT BUY THESE. If you have a phone similiar in size to the 6 plus, do not buy this! To make matters worse, I reached out to Merge using their support email listed on their website... after all they boast a 1 year warranty on the product I've owned for 3 weeks. So the support email bounced back with an error message "The email account that you tried to reach does not exist" So I tried the other email listed on their website and received the same message. I've also tried sending a message through their website directly and have no idea if that even went through. Fortunately Amazon allows returns up to 30 days so if I don't hear from them soon, I will be sending these back through Amazon.

Wow, I now understand all of the fuss about virtual reality. The head tracking and 360 degree views are awesome! The technology simply makes you feel like what you are experiencing is the real thing, as opposed to just looking at something on a screen. The device is comfortable and the adjustable lenses made it easy for me to get a clear picture. For thrill seekers, there are apps like Cedar Point VR, a roller-coaster app which is really exciting. I personally really enjoy more relaxing experiences like the storytelling apps called Walking New York and Inside Syria. What a great way to learn about the world!

It's so great that I don't need to own an expensive PC or gaming console to experience virtual reality. All I need is my iPhone (6+ in my case) and this!

This was my first VR headset purchase. I received them several days ago and have really enjoyed them…so have my kids. They are incredibly comfortable because the foam material they are made out of. Maybe more importantly for us, they’re easy to adjust for multiple users (other family members in my case). We can adjust both the straps and the lens themselves in less than 5 seconds which makes passing them around really easy. I whipped them out at a birthday party the other day and they were a hit.

I think one of the best things that Merge has done is make it easy to find good content that works with the headset. There actually is an amazing about of stuff out there - from 3D video, to games, to specialty app store apps. When you first put the headset on you can get started enjoying them right away, which for me was important to “hook” me.

Finally, the headset itself feels incredibly durable. You can tell they took a lot of time to design this with comfort and quality in mind. They are soft and strong at the same time. I am really impressed with this headset and hope they release even more gear soon!
