I've tried several DACs to see if they would improve the audio I get through my Sonos connect into my stereo system. My sense is that many DACS only really help if you are feeding CD or high resolution audio. This was the case with a Rega DAC I tried. I also tried the Sonlink DAC by Arcam. The latter did not seem to be much better than the DAC already built into the Sonos, at least for non-CD+ quality files. Frankly, the Sonos built in DAC is not bad, I just like to tweak and see what improvements I can get through my stereo. and since I find myself using the Sonos Connect more and more, it seemed reasonable to see what improvements are possible.

In the case of the Meridian Director though, I hear improvements in imaging and musicality with everything above junk (e.g. 64k) files, especially after it burned in for a couple of days. Obviously, the higher the resolution the better, but I've noticed distinct improvements in standard iTunes (240k) files. 340k internet streams of classical music sound simply awesome through this DAC. I'm even happier with some 128k internet radio streams. For my purposes, this is the first external DAC. I've decided to keep in my system, and I was not expecting to. I actually bought it from a vendor that lets you return for up to 60 days because I was so sure I would be unimpressed for my purposes. I'm surprised.

The only downsides are that, other than a USB port, you can't really share two non-PC devices easily, since the toslink and coax port are shared. On the other hand, that makes for a dead simple set up with my Sonos.

I use this off my Mac using ITunes and full resolution CD quality files or higher. Before this I ran toslink optical from Mac sound-card straight into preamp. The Director made this really obsolete, it changed everything. I am now hearing detail I thought was never there in everything I listen to. I consider myself an audiophile, having chased the audio tail ever since the early sixties; this little box is a game changer. It bypasses any computer analog/digital conversion method, replacing it with a USB connection to the Meridian's DAC. The Meridian has the best sounding DAC I have heard anywhere near this price point, simply amazing, I could never go back listening the other way! It should be a no-brainer if you listen to computer audio and looking for a vast improvement in one single stroke, this would be your best choice, hands down. The highs, heck - everything, will sound like nothing you have ever heard. It can power off the USB, very simple indeed. Believe me, just buy one.

I used this to connect my PS3 and Laptop to my Rega amplifier (to get rid of the Onkyo AVR) - this DAC brought my digital collection to life. If connecting a PS3, be sure to get a Toslink-to-Optical Mini Plug Digital cord to connect (the Meridian Director DAC uses a optical mini plug).
